Blakely Scores Game-Winning Goal; Jantzen Secures Career High Six Saves In 1-0 Shutout Victory Over Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The Webster University women's soccer closed out a three-game roadstand with a match at Hendrix College on Saturday. WU's Malaya Blakely netted the game-winning goal in the 15th minute as first-year goalkeeper Kayla Jantzen recorded a career-best six saves that led to a 1-0 shutout victory. With the victory, Webster improves to 5-2 overall and marks their fifth shutout of the season.  

In the opening minutes of the match, Webster sent the ball into the attacking zone that resulted in a shot on goal by Payton Harting but it was saved by Hendrix's goalkeeper Kennedy Lewis. For the next 12 minutes of play, the Warriors recorded five shots that included two on goal as Jantzen recorded two saves while the Gorloks were awarded two corner kicks.  

In the 15th minute, the Gorloks countered with an attack that resulted in a goal by Blakely that was assisted by Mia Smith. With that goal by Blakely, it marks her second game-winning goal of the season. With the assist by Smith, it marks her fourth of the season and is currently tied for first among all SLIAC student-athletes.  

In the 23rd minute, the Warriors had two great scoring opportunities that included one shot on goal as Jantzen collected the save. For the next 15 minutes of play, both teams battled back-and-forth as the Gorloks added two corner kicks but did not record a shot on either attempt. In the final minute of the first half, Hendrix had a great look at goal but the shot went out wide that lead to the 1-0 halftime lead. 

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Webster had three chances at the net that included shots by Payton Montana, Mayrin Soto, and Riley Cappozzo but Lewis recorded two saves. Shortly later, in the 71st minute, the Gorloks sent the ball into the attacking zone that resulted in a shot on goal by Gemma Bowers but it was saved by Lewis. Moments later, Smith blasted a shot toward the net but missed just over the crossbar. For the remainder of the match, Jantzen added two big time saves that kept the Warriors off the scoreboard that led to her second shutout of the season.  

For the match, Smith and Soto led the team with two shots each while Blakely's lone shot found the back of the net. Jantzen recorded a career-high six saves for her second career shutout victory.    

The Gorloks will open a two-game homestand on Wednesday, September 24 hosting Illinois College for a non-conference match starting at 6:00PM in Fenton, Missouri.
