Smith Sparks Second-Half Surge With Career High Assists and Goal In 3-0 Shutout Over IC

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened a two-game homestand by hosting Illinois College Wednesday evening at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks scored three second half goals in the span of six minutes that led to a 3-0 victory over IC. WU's Mia Smith sparked the second half surge with a career-high two assists while scoring her first goal of the season. With the victory, Webster improves to 6-2 overall and secures their sixth shutout of the season.

Webster and IC opened the match with back-and-forth play as both teams had multiple scoring opportunities. Webster's Mia Smith recorded the first three shots of the match for the Gorloks as all three attempts were on net but saved by Jesse Trost. The first two shots on goal taken by IC were saved by Webster's first-year goalkeeper Kayla Jantzen. Shortly later, in the 23rd minute, Malaya Blakely had a great opportunity to crack the tie with a shot on goal but it was saved by Trost.

Thirteen minutes later, Blakely had another scoring opportunity but her shot on goal was saved by Trost. In the final seconds of the first half, Blakely ripped a shot on net toward the right post but it was saved by Trost that kept the match scoreless after the first 45 minutes of action.

In the first five minutes of the second half, the Gorloks were awarded two kicks but did not find a shot on either attempt. Shortly later, in the 64th minute, the Gorloks advanced the ball into the attacking zone and earned a free kick approximately between the midfield line and the 18-yard box. Moments later, Mia Smith sent in a fantastic cross when Payton Montana headed the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Late in the 67th minute, the Gorloks gained possession off a punt near midfield line by IC's goalkeeper Trost when Smith collected the ball, took a couple dribbles toward the box, and found Elin Nilsson at the top of the box. Following one dribble by Nilsson, she blasted a shot in the back of the net for her first career Gorlok goal.

Less than three minutes later, Smith collected the ball from Montana approximately between the midfield line and 18-yard box and dribbled the ball with the outside of her foot toward the net when she ripped a long left-footed shot to the near post for her first goal of the season.

In the final 20 minutes of regulation, the Gorloks defense allowed only one shot on goal but it was saved by Jantzen and eliminated two corner kicks attempts without a shot.

For the match, the Gorloks recorded 11 shots as 10 of those shots were on goal. Smith led the team with four shots on goal while Blakely added three shots on goal. In net, Jantzen recorded five saves and her third shutout of the season.

The Gorloks will close out non-conference play on Saturday, September 27th hosting Cornell College at 2:00PM at WWT Soccer Park.
