Blakely and Nilsson Record Multi-Goal Performances; Gorloks Shutout Cornell 6-0 In Non-Conference Finale

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team closed out the month of September matches with a match against Cornell College on Saturday at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. WU's Malaya Blakely and Elin Nilsson earned their first multi-goal performances of the season while Mayrin Soto recorded a career-high three assists in the 6-0 shutout over the Rams. With the victory, Webster improves to 7-2 overall on the season and secured their seventh shutout of the season  

With this match against Cornell, Webster closed out non-conference play with a 17-8 goal differential and allowed only two goals in the past eight matches. Head Coach Luigi Scire reflected on the non-conference portion schedule and said "As we end the non-conference season on a successful note, The players have been fantastic in their preparation at practice and performance in each game. I also want to thank the coaching staff for their hard work in preparing the players and guiding them through a challenging month of September.  We are all excited and look forward to conference play in October". 

In the opening 10 minutes of the match, Webster set the tone on the offensive side of the pitch with two shots on goal and two corner kicks. In the second minute of play, the Gorloks had the first look at goal when Sofia Bosnos put a shot on goal but it was saved by CC's goalkeeper Sabrina Ibanez. Late in the third minute, Webster earned their first corner kick of the match but no shot was found on the attempt. In the sixth minute, the Gorloks attacked the box again which resulted in a shot on goal by Blakely but it was saved by Ibanez. In the eighth minute, Gorloks earned their second corner of the match but did not record a shot. 

For the next 10 minutes of play, the Gorloks added five shots led by Soto with two while Payton Harting and Payton Montana put a shot on goal each as both attempts were saved by Ibanez. Midway through the first half, Soto had a great chance at goal but her shot was saved. Between the 31st and 34th minutes, Montana recorded two shots on goal but both attempts were saved by Ibanez. 

In the 37th minute, the Gorloks added another counter attack when Nilsson collected the ball on the wing and sent in a fantastic cross. On the cross, Blakely was in the right spot at the right time as she tapped in the close-range shot for her first and team's first goal of the match.    

On the ensuing Cornell kickoff, the Gorloks intercepted the pass for a Rams midfielder and constructed a quick counter attack with just five passes. Blakely collected the four pass of the sequence and dribbled the ball to the box when she found a cutting Nilsson near the net for a left-footed goal. With these two goals scored in the span of 13 seconds, Webster moved into a tie for seventh all-time on the NCAA Division III women's soccer fastest consecutive goals scored by one team in a single game. 

In the final minutes of the first half, Blakely added two shots toward the net but missed left and right. The Gorloks defense did not allow a single shot to Cornell and took the 2-0 lead into halftime. 

The Gorloks came out in the second half with the same offensive aggressiveness and added two shots in the first five minutes. In the 48th minute, Riley Cappozzo had a scoring opportunity but her shot was saved. Just over two minutes later, Nilsson ripped a shot but missed just wide right. In the 53rd minute, the Gorloks sent the ball back into the attacking zone that resulted in a goal by Mia Smith which was assisted by Nilsson and Soto.

Shortly later, in the 60th minute, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking zone and earned two corner kicks. On the first corner kick attempt, Nilsson put a shot on goal but it was saved by Ibanez. On the second attempt, Soto sent in a great ball when Blakely turned a ripped a left-footed shot to the right post for her second goal of the match.  

In the 72nd minute, the Gorloks intercepted the pass from the Cornell defender when Smith sent in a cross into the ball. Following the ball batting around a couple Cornell players, Soto found Montana near the net as Montana put the ball in the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.  

Seven minutes later, in the 79th minute, Soto collected the ball at the top of the box and found a cutting Nilsson in the box when Nilsson blasted a right footed shot to the left post for her first Gorlok career multi-goal performance.  

On the ensuing Cornell kickoff, the Rams advanced the ball into Gorlok territory which resulted in a shot on goal but it was saved by Leia Adkins. That shot by Cornell came out to be the only shot on goal for the match. 

For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks added three shots which came from Maggie Brown, Harting, and Lorelli Barajas.

For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Rams 28-3 that included a shots on goal differential of 17-1. Montana led the attack with seven shots while Blakely recorded five. In addition to Soto's three assists, Nilsson recorded two assists while Blakely and Smith had one each. In net, Adkins recorded one save and her second shutout of the season. 

The Gorloks will open conference play this Wednesday, October 1 with a visit to Eureka College starting at 4:00PM in Eureka, Illinois.
