Gorloks Fall To #12 WashU In Final Minutes

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team continued non-conference play by hosting #12 Washington University on Saturday at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks batted the Bears tightly but fell late by the score of 1-2. WU's Alberto Duque Gonzalez netted his first goal of the season.

In the opening 10 minutes of the match, Webster and WashU battled between the endlines as the Bears recorded the first shot of the game but the attempt went out right. Moments later, in the 16th minute, the Gorloks constructed a counter attack that resulted in a shot on goal by Duque Gonzalez but it was saved by Cal L'Hommedieu. Less than three minutes later, WashU recorded two shots toward the net as one shot hit the crossbar and no rebound shot was found.

In the 36th minute, the Bears struck first on the scoreboard with a goal by Ethan Wirtschafter. For the remainder of the first half, the Gorloks defense eliminated two WashU corner kicks that kept the deficit at one.

The Gorloks and Bears opened the second half with back-and-forth play as either team did not record a shot. Shortly later, in the 55th minute, Charlie Noakes collected the ball near the midfield line and advanced the ball to Hayden Hatley on the right wing in stride. Moments later, Hatley made an unbelievable cross into the box to Duque Gonzalez when he collected the ball and faked out the WashU goalkeeper and netted the goal. With that goal, it tied the match at one apiece and his first of the season.

Less than three minutes later, the Bears added a counter attack that resulted in a shot on goal but it was saved by Luke Dillon. Moments later, the Gorloks defense eliminated two WashU corner kicks without allowing a shot. Webster and WashU continued the match with back-and-forth play as both teams had a look at goal.

In the 83rd minute, the Gorloks added a counter attack that resulted in a shot on goal by Scott Price but the attempt was saved by L'Hommedieu. Four minutes later, in the 87th minute, the Bears cracked the tie with a goal by Daniel Kochen which generated the final score.

For the match, Duque Gonzalez led the team with two shots on goal while Price added one shot on goal. In net, Dillon recorded two saves.

The Gorloks will open conference play this Wednesday, October 1 with a visit to Eureka College starting at 6:15PM in Eureka, Illinois.
