Fullenkamp Captures Three New Career Highs; Gorloks Split Opening Day At Rhodes College Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Webster University volleyball team opened tournament play with a pair of matches against Austin College and Hendrix College at the Rhodes College Classic on Friday. The Gorloks opened the day with a hard fought 3-1 victory over Austin College but dropped the nightcap match to Hendrix College by the score of 1-3 that generated the split. 

Right side senior hitter Delaney Fullenkamp set three career-highs between both matches; recorded three solo blocks against Austin College and 10 kills and four assisted blocks against Hendrix. 

Match #1: Webster 3, Austin College 1

Webster and Austin College opened the match trading 3-0 runs that included kills by Grace White and Tyler Ramstack. The set continued with back-and-forth play that pushed the set to a tie at nine apiece. Moments later, the Kangaroos added a 3-1 run that generated a 10-12 deficit.

With a two-point deficit, Webster erupted for a 12-2 run on the services of Jaycee Lewis that took the 22-14 advantage. In the run, Lewis had two service aces while Ramstack had two kills as Eva Tarlos and Fullenkamp had one kill each. WU's Lauren Brown and Tarlos closed out the set with back-to-back kills that won the set by the score of 25-17.

Austin College opened the second set with an early 11-4 advantage as Fullenkamp added two kills and a solo block during that stretch. Shortly later, the Gorloks cut the deficit to five at 8-13 that included kills by Ramstack, Tarlos, and Delaney Morio while Fullenkamp added her second solo both of the match. With the five-point chase, the Kangaroos added a 7-3 run that pushed the score to 11-20. Webster and Austin College traded points for the remainder of the set as AC tied the match at a set apiece by the score of 17-25. 

Webster opened the third set with an early 6-2 advantage that included kills by Brown and Tarlos. Moments later, Austin College responded with a 5-1 run that tied the match at seven apiece. The set continued with both teams exchanging points that rallied the set to 14 apiece.

With the match tied, the Gorloks responded with three consecutive points as Lauren Peterson put the Gorloks on top at 17-14 with a service ace. Immediately following the service ace, the Kangaroos countered with a 5-0 run that generated the deficit of 17-19. Moments later, Leah McGrath tied the set at 19 apiece with a huge solo block. 

For the next five points, Webster and Austin College traded points that generated a 21-22 deficit. With the deficit, the Gorloks took the lead 23-22 on consecutive errors by AU. Moments later, the Kangaroos took the 24-23 lead with back-to-back points. The Gorloks regained the serve and closed out the set with the final three points that included a kill by Brown and a service ace by Morio that secured the 26-24 set victory. 

Austin College opened the final set with the early 4-1 advantage but Webster responded with a 7-2 run that took the 8-6 lead. In the run, the Gorloks recorded four kills; one by Fullenkamp, Tarlos, Ramstack, and Lauren Harms while Peterson added her second service ace of the match. 

Immediately following the Webster run, Austin College countered with an 8-3 run that generated the 11-14 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks chipped back an 11-4 run and took the 23-18 advantage. In the run, Tarlos and Ramstack recorded two kills each while Brown and Harms added one kill. Tarlos also contributed a service ace in the run. 

With the Kangaroos backs against the wall, Austin College fought back and tied the set at 23 apiece with a 5-0 run. However, the Gorloks closed out the match with a kill by Catherine Rennier and an error by AC that won the match.

For the match, the Gorloks used a balanced attack as Ramstack, Tarlos, and Fullenkamp had eight kills each while Brown had seven as Harms recorded six. Setters Morio and Riley recorded 30 of the 38 total assists led by Morio with 18 while Watson dished out 16. Four Gorloks in Morio, Lewis, Tarlos, and Peterson recorded two service aces each. Defensively, Lewis led all student-athletes with 16 digs while Watson collected eight. At the net, Tarlos recorded four solo blocks while Fullenkamp recorded three.  


Match #2: Webster 1, Hendrix 3

Webster opened the nightcap decision against Hendrix in an early 3-9 deficit but trimmed the deficit to 10-13 with an 8-4 run. In the run, Fullenkamp got her career-high match started with two kills while Tarlos, Harms, Ramstack, and Brown added one each. However, the Warriors closed out the set with a 12-0 run that took the set. 

The Gorloks and Warriors opened the second set with back-and-forth play to a tie at five apiece. Moments later, Webster added a 5-2 run that started on a kill by Harms while White added three points with two kills and a block. Harms capped off the run with a kill that generated the 10-7 lead. Following that run by Webster, Hendrix countered with a 4-1 run that tied the set at 11.

With the set tied, the Gorloks responded with a 6-2 run that started on a kill by Brown and was capped off with a service ace by Tarlos that took the 17-13 advantage. The game of runs continued as the Warriors countered with a 5-1 run that cut the lead down to one at 19-18. With the one point lead, Webster added three consecutive points and pushed the lead to 22-18 that included an assisted block by Fullenkamp and Tarlos. Late in the set, Hendrix battled back and closed out the set with a 7-1 run that took the set.

The Warriors opened the third set by scoring the first three points of the set. Moments later, Webster erupted for a 12-1 run that took the 12-4 lead. In the run, Fullenkamp added two kills while Harms, White, Brown, and Tarlos registered one each as Lewis had a service ace. Both teams continued the set trading points as the Gorloks kept the 15-8 lead. Moments later, Hendrix chipped back with a 5-0 run and cut the lead to 15-13. 

Immediately following that Hendrix run, Webster countered with a 7-2 run that started on a kill by Harms. In addition to Harms, Maddie Bock, White, and Brown added a kill each that generated a 22-15 advantage. Late in the set, the Warriors added a 5-2 run but Tarlos finished the set with a kill that secured the 25-20 set victory. 

The Gorloks opened the fourth set with an early 7-3 advantage that included two kills, an assisted block by Fullenkamp and a service ace by Morio. Moments later, the Warriors added a 7-3 run that tied the set at 10 apiece. Following consecutive points by Webster that made the set 12-10, Hendrix responded with eight unanswered points that generated the 12-18 deficit. 

Immediately following that run by Hendrix, Webster fought back and constructed a 9-3 run that tied the set at 21. In the run, Harms recorded two service aces while Brown, Tarlos, and Fullenkamp recorded one kill each. However, the Warriors closed out the match with four consecutive points that generated the loss.

For the match, Fullenkamp led the team with a new career-high 10 kills while White had eight and Brown slammed seven. In addition, Harms captured a new career-high of four service aces. Setters Morio and Watson had 10 assists each while Brynn Peloquin dished out six. Defensively, Lewis and Harms secured 12 digs each while Watson collected eight. At the net, Brown, Tarlos, and White recorded one solo block each as Fullenkamp led with four assisted blocks.

The Gorloks will close out the classic on Saturday, September 6th with a match against the host, Rhodes College starting at 2:00PM.
