ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Webster University women's soccer team delivered a historic night Thursday evening, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Lyon College at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park. The victory marked the 400th career win for head coach Luigi Scire, who is the only head coach in Webster soccer history. Scire's milestone also marked the 400th win in program history.
The Gorloks wasted little time taking control, scoring five times in the opening 40 minutes to take a commanding 5-0 lead into halftime.
Lucy Elfrink opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the match, giving Webster an early 1-0 advantage. Mia Smith doubled the lead in the eighth minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from Elfrink.
Elfrink struck again in the 16th minute to make it 3-0 before Emily O'Reagan added another goal in the 33rd minute, again assisted by Elfrink. Sofia Bosnos capped the first-half scoring with a goal in the 39th minute, sending the Gorloks into the break with a five-goal cushion.
Webster continued its offensive attack in the second half. Malaya Blakely scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from Ellie Fiala, while Elfrink completed her hat trick in the 64th minute, scoring off a pass from Smith to make it 7-0.
The Gorloks dominated statistically throughout the evening, holding a 23-2 advantage in shots and putting 17 shots on goal compared to none for Lyon. Webster also earned six corner kicks to Lyon's one.
Webster's defense recorded its second consecutive shutout, while Leia Adkins and Kayla Jantzen combined to preserve the clean sheet.
With the victory, Webster improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in SLIAC play.
The Gorloks will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3, hosting Spalding University for their senior night at 1 p.m. at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park.
