15th-Ranked Gorloks Split Opening Day With 7-4 Victory Over Crusaders

BELTON, Tex. - The 15-ranked Webster University baseball team opened the 2026 season with a doubleheader at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at Red Murff Field. The Gorloks earned a split on opening day with a 7-4 victory in game one but dropped the night cap decision by the score of 1-11. Webster moves to 1-1 overall on the season. 

Game 1: Webster 7, UMHB 3
Webster opened the game with the sticks and James Theodore led off the game with an infield single. Moments later, first-year Braedan Trissell singled to right that advanced Theodore to second. With two runners on base, Ryan Hartz blasted a three-run homerun that gave Webster the 3-0 lead. 

In the bottom half, the 2026 ABCA Pre-Season All-American left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt earned the first start of the season on the mound and had a scoreless inning with a popout, a groundout, and flyout. In the top of the second, catcher Dalton Groves led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a single to left by Chris Lara. With two runners on base, Groves was caught stealing, going to third for the second out of the inning. The Gorloks got runners on the corners with a walk drawn by Theodore and wild pitch that advanced Lara to third but did not score in the inning. In the bottom half, the Crusaders added two hits and scored a run that made the score 3-1. 

In the top of the third, Adam Moser led off the inning with a double to left and later stole third. With a runner in scoring position, Hartz scored Moser with a sacrifice flyout to left that pushed the lead to 4-1. In the bottom frame, UMHB cut the deficit in half at 4-2 with a solo homerun. Following a scoreless top fourth inning by Webster, Mary Hardin-Baylor led off their frame with a solo homerun that made the score 4-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the Crusaders loaded the bases and tied the game at four apiece with a sacrifice flyout. Following that run, Webster called upon 2026 ABCA Pre-Season All-American right-hander Carter Hunt out the bullpen as he closed out the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. 

In the top of the sixth, Ethan Wielt led off the inning and reached base on an error. With two outs, first-year Logan Manuello ripped a double to center as Wielt came all the way around from first to score that took the 5-4 advantage. In the bottom half, Hunt had a very quick inning that included consecutive flyouts and a looking strikeout.

Following a scoreless seventh inning by both teams, the Gorloks added a single-run in the eighth on a RBI single by Theodore that scored Manuello that pushed the lead to 6-4. In the bottom half, Hunt recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts and a flyout. 

In the top of the ninth, Moser got the inning started with a lead off single to right and later stole second and third. With one out, Wielt scored Moser that increased the lead to 7-4. In the bottom frame, Hunt shut the door with an unassisted play by Jacob Charlson and closed out the game with a double-play turned by Lara and Charlson. 

For the game,  Hartz had a three-run home run and 4 RBI's while Theodore went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Moser had a great first game in a Gorlok uniform as he went 3-for-4 and scored twice. On the mound, Greifelt pitched four and one-third innings, allowed four runs, and recorded one strikeout. WU's Hunt closed out the final four and two-thirds innings, recorded five strikeouts, and earned the win. 

Game 2: Webster 1, UMHB 11
The nightcap decision opened with a scoreless first inning as senior right-hander Elijah Rompala-Matthews recorded two strikeouts. In the bottom of the second, the Crusaders loaded the bases and took the 1-0 lead on a hit-by-pitch. Moments later, UMHB scored their second run of the inning on an unassisted out at second base by the Gorloks. Webster got out of the jam with a caught stealing attempt started by Nick Wrubluski, cut off by Trissell at second, and Trissell threw out the runner at home to Wrubluski for the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Crusaders loaded the bases and scored a run on a base-hit to left that made the score 0-3. In the top of the fourth, Hartz reached base on a walk but did not advance. In the bottom of the fourth, Rompala-Matthews had a scoreless frame that included a groundout and two looking strikeouts. 

In the top of the fifth, Wrubluski led off the inning with a single to left and later stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Moments later, Reid Heitpas drew a walk that put runners on the corners but both runners were stranded. In the bottom half, Rompala-Matthews got two quick flyouts when Wrubluski ended the inning with a throw down to second that caught the runner stealing. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Webster called upon reliever Michael Pasquesi as the Crusaders added two hits and a run that made the score 0-4. With runners on the corners, the Gorloks called up Jack Wilson out of the bullpen. Moments later, UMHB added three runs with a sacrifice fly and a two-run double that pushed the score to 0-7. 

In the top of the seventh, Wrubluski led off the inning with a solo homerun that made the score 1-7. In the bottom half, Webster called upon reliever Collin Johnson and struck out the first batter he faced. Shortly later, the Crusaders loaded the bases on walks and added a run with a sacrifice fly to Theodore in center. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Webster made their final pitching change of the game and called upon first-year Tristan Lakis. Shortly later, UMHB loaded the bases with walks and scored a run on a wild pitch. With one out, the Crusaders ended the game with a two-run single to left. 

For the game, Wrubluski went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun while Moser added the only other hit for Webster. On the mound, Rompala-Matthews pitched five complete innings and six strikeouts. The Gorloks used four relievers as Johnson recorded two strikeouts. 

The Gorloks will close out this series tomorrow, February 14 with a single-game starting at 6:00PM in Belton, Texas.
