15th-Ranked Gorloks Drop Series To Mary Hardin-Baylor

BELTON, Tex. - The 15th-ranked Webster University baseball team closed out the weekend series at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a single-game  Saturday evening at Lake Belton High School. The Gorloks dropped the series finale by the score of 7-10. With the defeat, Webster moves to 1-2 overall on the season.  

Webster and UMHB opened the series finale with a scoreless first inning as first-year pitcher Cole Armbrust recorded a groundout, picked off a runner, and earned his first collegiate strikeout. 

In the second, Ryan Hartz led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. With a runner in scoring position, Nick Wrubluski laced a single to center that scored Hartz for the 1-0 lead. Moments later, Ethan Wielt followed up with a single that advanced Wrubluski to third. With no outs, Dalton Groves increased the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Wrubluski. The Gorloks got Wielt to third but he was left stranded. In the bottom half, Armbrust recorded his second consecutive shutout inning that included a strikeout, a popout, and line out. 

In the top of the third, James Theodore led off the inning with a walk but was caught stealing second. First-year Braedan Trissell followed up with a walk and stole second. With two outs, Hartz ripped an RBI single that scored Trissell for the 3-0 advantage. In the bottom half, the Crusaders erupted for a nine-run inning as reliever Wes Carter got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the fourth inning, both teams did not record as reliever Zach Mevert recorded a ground out and Groves caught a Crusader stealing at second. 

In the top of the fifth, Theodore got the inning started with a lead off walk. Moments later, Trissell blasted a two-run homerun that made the score 5-9. With one out, Hartz laced a double down the left field line. With two outs, Wielt ripped an RBI single to right that scored Hartz that made the score 6-9. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Mevert recorded a scoreless inning on the mound as he struck out the side. In the bottom of the sixth, the Crusaders added a triple and later scored a single-run that pushed the score to 6-10. 

In the seventh inning, both teams recorded a scoreless inning as Mevert added a strikeout and a flyout. In the bottom of the eighth, Webster called upon reliever Bauer Dalke as he recorded a scoreless inning with a flyout, pop out, and a strikeout. 

In the top of the ninth, Theodore led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on the throw. With one out, Adam Moser drove in Theodore with a single which ended up being the final run for Webster. 
For the game, Wielt went a perfect 4-for-4 with and drove in one RBI. In addition, Hartz, went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored while Trissell blasted a two-run homerun. Theodore went 1-for-3 and scored twice while Moser and Groves drove in one each.

On the mound, Armbrust pitched two and one-third innings and recorded two strikeouts. Carter recorded one inning of work and had one strikeout. Mevert led the staff with 3.2 innings of work and recorded five strikeouts. Dalke closed out the game with a scoreless inning and one strikeout.

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Friday, February 20th with a neutral site matchup against Millikin University starting at 11:00AM in Millington, Tennessee.
