Top-Seeded Gorloks Eliminated Golden Eagles 79-43; Advances To SLIAC Championship Game

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened postseason play by hosting the fourth-seeded Spalding University for the SLIAC Men's Basketball semifinal game Thursday evening in Grant Gym. The top-seeded Gorloks eliminated the Golden Eagles by the score of 79-43. With the victory, Webster advances to the SLIAC Championship game on Saturday against MUW. Webster improves to 23-3 overall in the season. 

Webster opened the game with the early 10-2 advantage that included four points by Ethan Chartrand and two points each from Jemard Sykes II, Justin Ugo, and Charles Nelson. Following a three-pointer by the Golden Eagles, the Gorloks countered with a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 19-5 that included three points from Nelson and a basket each from Adam Painter, Chartrand, and Sebastian Reed.

Midway through the half, Spalding added a 7-2 run that made the score 21-12 as Reed sank a jumper for Webster. For the final seven minutes of the half, the Gorloks added a 12-4 run that included six points by Nelson, four points by Reed, and a basket by Painter that generated the 33-16 halftime lead. 

Webster opened the second half with a 12-6 run that pushed the score to 45-22. In the run, Ugo contributed eight points while Sykes II and Nelson added two points each. Shortly later, Webster and Spalding traded baskets to the score of 52-29 that included five points by Chartrand and a layup by Nbaye Thiam.

With 13 minutes to go, the Gorloks constructed a 17-5 run that increased the lead to 69-36. In the run, Chartrand led with four points while Reed, Thiam, Sykes II, Ugo, and Nelson added two points each. The run was capped off with an and-one play by Painter.

With just over four minutes left, Dallas Harding-Fair added six consecutive points for the Gorloks that increased the lead to 75-41. WU's Jalen Davis and Colin DeBold capped off the scoring for Webster with a basket each that generated the final score.  

For the game, Nelson and Chartrand recorded 15 points each while Ugo contributed 12 points. Reed rounded the double-figure scorers with 10 points. Painter recorded seven points, a team-high of seven rebounds, a team-four steals, and the only two blocks of the game for Webster.

The Gorloks will host the Owls of MUW on Saturday, February 28 for the SLIAC Championship game starting at 1:00pm in Grant Gym.
