Women’s Basketball Rallies Late With Dominate Fourth Quarter To Surge Past Spalding 57-44; Gorloks Advances to SLIAC Championship Game

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The top-seeded Webster University women's basketball team opened postseason play by hosting Spalding University for the SLIAC Women's Basketball Semifinal game Friday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks eliminated the Golden Eagles behind a 20-7 fourth quarter run that earned a 57-44 victory. With the victory, Webster advances to the SLIAC Women's Basketball Championship game. 

Spalding opened the game with the 7-2 advantage as Meghan Illingworth made a jumper in the paint. Following a free-throw by Miya Webb that made the score 3-7, the Golden Eagles constructed a 10-2 run that made the deficit 5-17. WU's Kaimyla Nolen closed out the quarter scoring with a layup that made the score 7-17.

Webster and Spalding opened the second quarter trading baskets to the score of 13-23 that included two points each from Nolen, Webb, and Claire Williams. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit to 18-23 with a layup by Emma Smith and a three-pointer by Akaela Caquelin. With under four minutes to go, the Golden Eagles added an 8-4 run to the score of 22-31 as Williams and Caquelin added a basket each. Caquelin closed out the first half scoring with a layup that generated the 24-31 halftime deficit. 

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Gorloks cut the deficit to one at 30-31 on back-to-back three-pointers by Williams and Webb. Shortly later, Spalding added a 6-1 run that made the score 31-37. The Gorloks closed out the final minute and six seconds of the quarter with a 6-0 run that included a three-pointer by Addison Price, a free-throw by Nolen, and a layup by Caquelin that tied the game at 37 apiece. 

The Gorloks opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run that generated the 46-39 lead. In the run, Caquelin added consecutive three-pointers while Webb sank a free-throw when Nolen capped it off with a layup. Following a three-pointer by Spalding (42-46), Webster closed out the game with an 11-2 run that included five points by Illingworth, four points by Webb, and a pair of free-throws by Daijah Jones that generated the 57-44 victory.  

For the game, Caquelin led the team with 15 points while collecting five rebounds and two assists. Webb contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and a team-high five steals. Nolen added eight points, collected three rebounds, and had two steals. Illingworth led the team with 11 rebounds while adding seven points and two blocks. 

The Gorloks will play in the SLIAC Championship game on Saturday, February 28 against Principia College at 7:00PM in Grant Gym.
