Late Innings Rally Falls Short To Transylvania 3-4 in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ken. - The Webster University baseball team opened the weekend in Kentucky with a non-conference decision against Transylvania University. The Gorloks battled back from a four-run deficit with a three-run seventh inning but fell short by the score of 3-4. Webster moves to 2-5 on the season. 

Webster and Transylvania opened this game with a scoreless first inning as first-year pitcher Colt Armbrust recorded two strikeouts. 

In the bottom of the second, the Pioneers got a lead off triple then struck first on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly that made the score 0-1. With two outs and a runner on second, the Pioneers doubled the deficit to 0-2 with an RBI single up the middle. Armbrust got out of the inning with a strikeout for his third of the game. 

In the bottom of the third, the Pioneers got a lead off single and that runner eventually made it to third on a steal and wild pitch. Moments later, Armbrust recorded back-to-back strikeouts. With two outs, the Pioneers recorded consecutive hits that produced two runs and made the score 0-4. 

In the top of the fourth, Dalton Groves led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a single by Ryan Hartz. Following a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners with one out, the Gorloks did not scratch a run as the inning ended with a 4-6-3 double play. 

In the top of the fifth, Adam Moser led off with an infield single to shortstop but was out at second on a fielder's choice. The next batter in Jacob Charlson, reached base on a hit-by-pitch that put two runners on. Moments later, James Theodore laced a single to right but Hietpas was thrown out at home that ended the inning. 

In the bottom half, Webster called upon Wes Carter out of the bullpen and recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeouts, a pickoff, and a groundout. In the bottom of the sixth, Carter worked out of a two-hit jam with a flyout that kept the score at 0-4. 

In the top of the seventh, Ethan Wielt led off with a single to center and advanced to third on a double by Moser. With one out and runners on the corners, Charlson laced a two-run single to left that made the score 2-4. Following two wild pitches that moved Charlson to third, Charlson scored on a wild pitch that made the score 3-4. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Carter retired the first batter of the inning which ended his outing. Webster made a pitching change to Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he recorded the final two outs of the innings that kept the game at 3-4. 

In the eighth inning, both teams recorded a scoreless inning as Rompala-Matthews sent down the Pioneers in order. In the top of the ninth, the Gorloks were sent down in order that ended the game. 

For the game, Moser led the team with two hits while Charlson led with two RBI's. Six other Gorloks recorded a hit. On the mound, Armbrust pitched four complete innings and recorded a career-high seven strikeouts. Carter delivered two and one-thirds innings and punched out two batters. Rompala-Matthews closed out the final inning and two-thirds and fanned one batter.
