Softball Earns First Sweep of the Season With Victories Over Grinnell

EUREKA, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued their 11-game homestand by hosting Grinnell College for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Gorloks secured their first sweep of the season with a walk-hit by Marah Schotz in game one and took down the Pioneers 11-4 in the nightcap. With the victories, Webster improves to 4-5 overall on the season. 

Game 1: Webster 3, Grinnell 2 (8 Innings)
First-year pitcher Addison Penn got the start in the circle for game one and retired the first batter she faced. Moments later, Grinnell got a triple and struck first with a sacrifice fly that took the early 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Sophie Errante and Ainsley Hinz recorded singles but were both left stranded. 

In the second, Penn recorded a scoreless inning in the circle that included three flyouts. In the bottom half, Schotz reached base on a walk but did not advance further.

In the top of the third, Penn allowed a hit and recorded an error but worked out of the jam with a flyout and a lineout that kept the score at 1-0.

In the fourth, Grinnell got their first batters of the inning on base with a hit-by-pitch and a bunt single that put runners on the corners. Moments later, the Pioneers executed a double-steal attempt that increased the deficit to 2-0. Following a single by Grinnell that put runners on the corners, it ended the day for Penn. Webster called upon Adriana Rodriguez. Rodriguez got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fielder's choice that ended the inning. 

In the bottom frame, Emma Lanz led off the inning with a triple to center and scored on an RBI single to left by Vanessa Saenz that made the score 1-2. Following that single, Brie Hale entered the game as a pinch runner and stole second. With two outs and runner in scoring position, first-year Paige Vogelgesang laced an RBI single to center that scored Hale and tied the game at two apiece. 

In the sixth, Rodriguez sent down the Pioneers in order with a popout, flyout, and a strikeout. The Gorloks were held scoreless for the inning as Olivia Hartupee got a single.

In the seventh inning, Rodriguez held Grinnell scoreless again that included a groundout and two flyouts. In the bottom half, Errante got the inning started with a single to center and stole second. However, Errante was left stranded that forced an extra inning. 

In the eighth, Grinnell recorded a one-out single and stole second. With one out and the go-ahead run in scoring position, Rodriguez kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard with a strikeout and a groundout. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Saenz got the half inning started with a one-out walk as Kelsey Sommers entered the game as the pinch runner for Saenz. Moments later, Sommers stole second. With one out, Schotz walked off the game with an RBI single to left that scored Sommers and won by the score of 3-2. 

For the game, Errante went a perfect 3-for-3. Saenz, Schotz, and Vogelgesang recorded a hit and an RBI each. In the circle, Penn pitched three and one-third innings and recorded nine flyouts and one groundout. Rodriguez closed out the final four and two-thirds innings and recorded seven flyouts, four strikeouts, and three groundouts.


Game 2: Webster 11, Grinnell 4
First-year pitcher Kailey Rushman earned the start in the circle for game two and worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a popout and a flyout for a scoreless inning. 

In the button half, Isabelle Loiben led off with a walk and later stole second. With one-out, Stichling laced an infield single that advanced Loiben to third. With runners on the corners, Brystol Klossner got the Gorloks on the scoreboard with an RBI single to left that scored Loiben. Following a walk drawn by Ava Reinecke that loaded the bases, Abigail Chandler stretched the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice flyout that scored Stichling. 

In the second, Rushman added a strikeout and then worked out of bases-loaded jam with a flyout to center that kept Grinnell scoreless. In the third, the Pioneers added two runs on with a walk and back-to-back RBI doubles that tied the game at two apiece. 

In the bottom half of the third, Aurora Lomheim led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Stichling ripped an RBI single to right that scored Lomheim to be back on top at 3-2. Following that play, Hartupee entered the game as a pinch runner at first and stole second. Moments later, Reinecke reached first on an error by Grinnell that advanced Hartupee to third. Penn entered the game as a pinch runner at first. 

With runners on the corners, Chandler reached on an error by Grinnell shortstop that allowed Hartupee to score which made the score 4-2. Vogelsesang continued the hot inning with a single to left that loaded the bases which promoted a Pioneer pitching change. 

Following that pitching change, Sommers put the ball in play as a failed fielder's choice attempt by Grinnell scored Penn that increased the lead to 5-2. With the bases loaded, Chandler scored on a wild pitch that pushed the lead to 6-2. With runners in scoring position, Hale drove in Vogelgesang for the 7-2 lead. With two-outs and Sommers on third, Loiben capped off the six-run inning with an RBI single that scored Sommers that increased the lead to 8-2.

In the fourth, Grinnell recorded a triple and an RBI single that made the score 8-3. In the fifth, Rushman recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts and fielder's choice out at second.

In the bottom of the fifth, Vogelgesang led off the inning with an infield single then stole second. Hale followed up with a single to center that advanced Vogelgesang to third and then Hale stole second. With runners in scoring position, Loiben drew a walk. With the bases loaded, Stichling smashed a two-run single to center that increased the lead to 10-3 as Vogelgesang and Hale scored. 

In the top of the sixth, Stichling took over in the circle as Grinnell added three hits that produced a single-run that made the score 10-4. Stichling got off the inning without any further damage with two flyouts and a popout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Reinecke led off with a double to left then stole third. With Reinecke on third, Chandler roped an RBI double to center that scored Reinecke which was the final run of the game for Webster. In the top of the seventh, Stichling sent down the Pioneers in order with a lineout, pop out, and a flyout.

For the game, Stichling went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and scored while Chandler went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and scored. In addition, Vogelgesang went 2-for-4 with and scored twice while Sommers went 1-for-4 with an RBI and scored. Also, Loiben went 1-for-2 with two walks, had one RBI, and scored. Klossner and Hale both added a hit and an RBI each while Reinecke went 1-for-3 and scored.

In the circle, Rushman delivered five complete innings and recorded eight flyouts, four strikeouts, and two flyouts. Stichling closed out the final two innings, faced nine batters and recorded six flyouts.
