Gorloks Sweep Monmouth; Extends Win Streak to Four Games

EUREKA, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued their homestand by hosting Monmouth College for a doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the Scots by the scores of 9-5 and 3-1. With the victories, Webster moves to 5-5 overall and extends win streak to four games.

Game 1: Webster 9, Monmouth 5
Senior pitcher Ainsley Hinz got the start in the circle and got in a bases-loaded jam. Moments later, Monmouth took the early 0-2 lead with a two-run double to left. Following a strikeout by Hinz, the Scots recorded an RBI groundout that made the score 0-3. Hinz got out of the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom half, Sophie Errante got the inning started with a one-out single to right and advanced to second on a single by Kacey Ekstrom. With two outs and runners on the corners, Marah Schotz cut the deficit to one at 2-3 with a two-run double to left that scored Errante and Ekstrom.

In the second inning, both teams were held scoreless as Hinz sent down the Scots in order that included a groundout, a strikeout, and a popout. In the third inning, Hinz recorded her second consecutive shutout inning as she recorded a strikeout, groundout, and a popout. 

In the bottom half, Isabelle Loiben led off with a single up the middle then scored on an RBI double by Errante that tied the game at three apiece. With Errante on second, Ekstrom followed and switched spots with Errante with a double to right center that put the Gorloks on top at 4-3. With one out and Ekstrom on third, Schotz laced an RBI single to center that made the score 5-3. Moments later, Abigail Chandler reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. Following an error by Monmouth that advanced Chandler to third, Natalie Puentes capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single to left that scored Chandler and increased the lead to 6-3. 

In the fourth, Monmouth got their first batter of the inning on by an error but Hinz followed up by making all three outs; a strikeout, a lineout back to herself, and a groundout back to her. In the bottom frame, Loiben led off with a single and stole second. With two outs, Adriana Rodriguez laced an RBI single that scored Loiben that made the score 7-3. Moments later, Schotz smashed an RBI triple to right that scored Rodriguez for the 8-3 advantage. Following a Scots pitching change, Chandler ripped an RBI double to right that scored Schotz that made the score 9-3. 

In the fifth inning, Hinz had a quick inning that included a 6-4-3 double play and a groundout back to herself in the circle. In the sixth, the Scots got a run back on a solo homer. In the seventh, Monmouth added a single-run that generated the final score. 

For the game, Schotz went a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in four RBI's. Errante and Ekstrom went 2-for-4, scored twice, and had one RBI each. Loiben went 2-for-4 and scored twice. In the circle, Hinz pitched a complete game and recorded five strikeouts.

Game 2: Webster 3, Monmouth 1 
First-year pitcher Brystol Klossner earned the start for game two in the circle and worked out of a jam with consecutive strikeouts for a scoreless first inning. In the bottom half, Errante led off with a single to center and stole second but she was left stranded. 

In the second, Klossner sent down the Scots in order with a groundout, strikeout, and a popout. In the bottom frame, Vanessa Saenz led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kelsey Sommers. Saenz reached third on a wild pitch but did not score, which kept the game scoreless.

In the third, Klossner recorded her third consecutive scoreless inning that included two flyouts and a groundout to herself in the circle. In the bottom, Brie Hale led off with a single to left but was caught stealing at second. The Gorloks did not get a run in this inning. 

In the fourth, Monmouth recorded two singles but Klossner shut them down with two flyouts and a pop-up. In the bottom half, Madi Stichling led off with a single then Olivia Hartupee entered the game at pinch runner. Moments later, Hinz laced an infield single that advanced Hartupee to second. However, both runners were stranded, which kept the game scoreless. 

In the fifth, Webster called upon Kailey Rushman as she took over in the circle. Shortly later, the Scots loaded the bases on two walks and a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Monmouth struck first on the scoreboard with an RBI single that made the score 0-1. Rushman got out the inning with a groundout to herself in the circle. 

In the sixth, Rushman allowed two hits but kept the Scots off the board with a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout to herself. In the bottom half, Addison Penn led off with a single to right and advanced to third on a single to right center by Stichling as Chandler entered as pinch runner for Stichling. 

With one out, Chandler stole second to be in scoring position. With runners in scoring position, Saenz gave the Gorloks the 2-1 lead as she ripped a two-run single to right that scored Penn and Chandler. Moments later, Ava Reinecke followed up with a single to left that advanced Saenz to second. Following a walk drawn by Sommers that loaded the bases, Loiben drew a walk that increased the lead to 3-1. 

In the seventh, Rushman got two quick outs with consecutive groundouts. Moments later, the Scots added a single that put the tying run in the box. With two outs, Rushman shut the door with a looking strikeout that secured the victory.   

For the game, Saenz went 1-for-2, drove in two runs, and scored. Stichling went 2-for-3 in the box. In the circle Klossner pitched four innings and recorded three strikeouts while Rushman closed out the final three innings and recorded two strikeouts.
