Webster Softball Falls Twice To Luther

EUREKA, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued non-conference play by hosting  Luther College for a doubleheader. The Gorloks fell twice to the Norse by the final scores of 0-9 and 6-9. Webster moves to 5-7 overall.

Game 1: Webster 0, Luther 9
The Gorloks and Norse opened the game with a scoreless first inning as Ainsley Hinz worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout to Marah Schotz at third. In the bottom half, the Gorloks loaded the bases on walks by Madi Stichling and Brystol Klossner while Schotz reached on an error, but did not score a run.

In the top of the second, Hinz sent down the Norse in order that included a strikeout and two groundouts. In the bottom half, Brie Hale and Sophie Errante drew a walk but runners were left stranded. 

In the third, Hinz recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts and a groundout to Schotz at third. In the fourth, the Norse recorded a lead off walk and that runner stole second. Luther struck first on the scoreboard with a single up the middle that ended Hinz's outing, 
 
Webster called upon Adriana Rodriguez and sent down the first batter she faced with a popout Hale at second. With one out and runner on third, Rodriguez delivered a wild pitch that made the deficit 0-2. However, Rodriguez got out of the inning with consecutive outs; lineout and a pop out.

In the top of the fifth, the Norse recorded three consecutive hits that loaded the bases when they increased the deficit to 0-3 on a wild pitch. Moments later, Luther added another run with a groundout to Paige Vogelgesang at short. Luther added an RBI double to left center that made the score 0-5. Rodriguez got out the inning with a groundout and a strikeout.

In the sixth, Luther added a run on a passed ball that made the score 0-6. Rodriguez got out of a bases-loaded jam popout to Hale at second. In the bottom half, Hale laced single to right and advanced to second on an error, but was left stranded. 

In the seventh, Webster made a pitching change and called upon Addison Penn as she sent down the first batter she faced. Shortly later, Webster allowed a two-run error that made the score 0-8. Luther closed out the scoring for the game with a groundout to Hale at second. Penn got out of the inning with a groundout to Schotz at third.

In the bottom of the seventh, Penn led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to third on a double by Klossner. However, both runners were left stranded that ended the game.  

For the game, Klossner recorded a team-high two hits while Hale and Penn had one each. In the circle, Hinz pitched three innings and recorded three strikeouts. Rodriguez delivered three innings of relief and struckouts two batters. Penn closed out the game and allowed only one hit.

Game 2: Webster 6, Luther 9
First-year pitcher Kailey Rushman earned the start in the circle as Luther recorded four consecutive hits that led to a 0-3 deficit. Shortly later, the Norse capped off the four-run inning on a fielding error by Webster. Rushman got out of the inning with a lineout to Vanessa Saenz.

In the bottom of the first, Isabelle Loiben led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a walk drawn by Penn. With two out, Hartupee laced a two-run single up the middle that scored Loiben and Penn which cut the deficit to 2-4. 

In the top of the second, Luther recorded a single, a stolen base, and an RBI single to right that made the score 2-5. Rushman got out the inning with a popout Vogelgesang at short. In the top of the third, the Norse recorded a lead off double and that runner advanced to third on a passed ball. Following a strikeout and a foul out recorded by Rushman, Luther added a single-run on an RBI single to left that made the score 2-6. Following that out, Webster made a pitching change and entered in Stichling. Stichling got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the top of the fourth, Stichling sent down the Norse in order with a groundout, flyout, and foul out to Ava Reinecke behind the dish. In the bottom half, Vogelgesang got the half inning started with a two-out single to center and advanced to second on a single by Natalie Puentes. Moments later, both runners advanced one base on a passed ball. Following a walk drawn by Kelsey Sommers that loaded the bases, Loiben recorded an RBI single that scored Vogelgesang which cut the deficit in half at 3-6. 

In the fifth, Luther added a single-run on a lead off solo homer. Stichling retired the side in order after that blast with a popout, foul out to Reinecke, and a strikeout. 

In the top of the sixth, Luther increased the deficit to 3-9 with a two-run single. In the bottom half, the Gorloks loaded the bases on three consecutive walks drawn by Puentes, Sommers, and Loiben. With one out, Saenz drove in Puentes that made the score 4-9. With runners on the corners and two outs, Hinz ripped an RBI double to center that scored Sommers which pushed the score to 5-9. 

In the top of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change and entered in Klossner as she recorded a scoreless inning with two popouts and a foul out at first. In the bottom half, Puentes got the inning going with a two-out single to right and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Sommers. With runners on the corners, Loiben laced an RBI single to center that scored Puentes for the final run of the game.  

For the game, Loiben led the team with a career-high three hits and two RBI's while Hartupee tied Loiben with two RBI's. Hinz and Hartupee added two hits each. In the circle, Rushman pitched 2.2 innings and recorded five flyouts. Stichling delivered 3.1 innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts. Klossner closed out the game with three flyouts.
