Greifelt’s Double-Digit Strikeout Performance; Groves Season-High Three RBI’s Power Past Buena Vista 9-1 In Home Opener

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team played in front of their home crowd for the first time this season by hosting Buena Vista University. The Gorloks took down the Beavers by the score of 9-1 behind eight strong innings, 10 strikeouts, and a two-hit performance from starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt. WU's Dalton Groves led the offense with a season-high three RBI's. With the victory, Webster improves to 3-7 overall and extended their home win streak to 20 games dating back to last season. 

Greifelt earned his fourth start of the season on the mound and opened the game with two groundouts and a strikeout for a scoreless inning. In the top of the second, Buena Vista recorded a lead off double to right and a groundout that put a runner on third base. Moments later, BVU took the early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice flyout. Greifelt got out of the inning with a strikeout that kept the deficit at one. 

In the third, both teams recorded a scoreless inning as Greifelt sent down the Beavers in order with two groundouts and a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Hartz led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Adam Moser smashed an RBI triple to center which scored Hartz and tied the game at one apiece. With Moser on third, Groves executed a squeeze bunt to perfection which allowed Moser to score and gave the Gorloks the 2-1 lead. 

In the fifth, BVU and Webster were held to a scoreless inning as Greifelt recorded a groundout, a strikeout, and a popout to short. 

In the top of the sixth, Greifelt kept the dominance going and sent down the Beavers in order with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, James Theodore led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. With Theodore on second, Hartz moved Theodore to third with a sacrifice bunt. With one out and Theodore on third, Nick Wrubluski executed a squeeze bunt that allowed Theodore to score and increase the lead to 3-1.  

In the seventh inning, Greifelt recorded another 1-2-3 inning which included two strikeouts and line out Theodore in center. 

In the eighth, Greifelt recorded his seventh shutout inning with two strikeouts and a flyout to Theodore. In the bottom half, the Gorloks exploded for a six-run inning that started on a RBI single to left by Hartz that scored Theodore and made the score 4-1. Moments later, with Hartz and Wrubluski in scoring position, Hartz increased the lead to 5-1 as he scored on a passed ball. With no outs, Groves recorded a two-run double to right center that scored Wrubluski and Moser for the 7-1 advantage. With one out and runners on the corners, Reid Hietpas laid down a great squeeze bunt that scored Groves and increased the lead to 8-1. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Talan Hutchings capped off the six-run inning and generated the 9-1 lead with an RBI single to left center that scored Matthew Lanier

In the top of the ninth, Webster called upon right-handed reliever Wes Carter out of the bullpen as he shut the door with two strikeouts and a groundout.

For the game, and in addition to Groves three RBI's, Hartz went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Moser recorded a hit, two runs, and one RBI. Webster used only two pitchers in Greifelt and Carter as Greifelt allowed only two hits.
