Gorloks Upset RV UW-La Crosse 9-5 Behind Five-Run and Four-Run Innings

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their 10-game homestand with a non-conference decision against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Gorloks rallied with a five-run third and four-run seventh that upset the 24th-ranked Eagles by the score of 9-5. With the victory, Webster improves to 4-7 overall. 

Right-hander Carter Hunt took the mound for the Gorloks and recorded a scoreless first inning that included a lineout and a groundout doubleplay. In the second, Hunt recorded a strikeout when catcher Nick Wrubluski threw out the runner trying to steal second. With two outs, the Eagles struck first on the scoreboard with a solo homer that made the score 0-1. Hunt got out of the inning with a foul out to Ethan Wielt at first base. In the top of the third, La-Crosse recorded a leadoff double as that runner ended up scoring that generated the 2-0 deficit. 

In the bottom half of the third, the Gorloks took the lead with a five-run inning that started on a lead off single to left by Reid Hietpas as he advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch taken by Jacob Charlson. Moments later, Braedan Trissell entered the game as a pinch hitter and laid down a bunt single that loaded the bases. With no outs, James Theodore drove in Heitpas with a fielder's choice for the first run of the game.

Following a hit-by-pitch taken by Ryan Hartz that loaded the bases, Nick Wrubluski was an RBI hit-by-pitch that scored Charlson that tied the game at two apiece. With one out and the bases juiced, Adam Moser recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch that scored Theodore which took the 3-2 lead. The five-run inning was capped off with a two-run double by Dalton Groves that scored Wrubluski and Hartz for the 5-2 advantage. 

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles added a single-run behind a walk, a double, and an RBI groundout. In the fifth through seventh innings, Hunt recorded shutout ball that included three strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Hieptas led off with a single to center, stole second, and advanced to third by Charlson. With one out, Trissell drove in Hieptas that took the 6-3 lead. With two outs, Theodore singled to center, Hartz was intentionally walked, then Moser laced a two-run single to center for the 8-3 lead. Groves capped off the four-run inning to the score of 9-3 with an RBI single down the left field line that scored Hartz.

In the top of the eighth, Hunt retired the first two batters he faced then allowed a double. Moments later, the Eagles added a run on a throwing error by Trissell that made the score 9-4. Following that play, Webster called upon reliever Wes Carter and he allowed an RBI double that made the score 9-5. Following that play, Webster made another pitching change to Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he got out of the inning with a groundout. In the ninth, he shut the door with three groundouts.

For the game, Groves and Hietpas recorded two hits and two RBI's each while Moser drove in a team-high three runs. On the mound, Hunt pitched 7.2 innings and recorded seven strikeouts. Reliever Rompala-Matthews closed out the game and recorded four groundouts.
