Baseball Falls To North Park

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their 10-game homestand with a non-conference decision against North Park University. The Gorloks recorded 11 hits but fell by the score of 3-10. Webster moves to 4-8 overall. 

First-year starting right-hander Colt Armbrust earned his fourth start of the season on the mound as he got in a jam with a double, an intentional walk, and a balk. Moments later, North Park struck first on the scoreboard on an error by Webster. With the bases loaded, Armbrust recorded a wild pitch that allowed a runner to score which stretched the deficit to 0-2. Armbrust got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout. 

In the bottom half, Ryan Hartz laced a single to left while Nick Wrubluski reached on error but both runners were left stranded. 

In the top of the second, North Park recorded a four-run inning that started on a lead off solo homer that made the score 0-3. Shortly later, the Vikings loaded the bases with two walks and a single. With the bases loaded, North Park stretched the deficit to 0-5 with a two-run single through the left side which ended Armbrust's outing. 

Webster called upon reliever Zach Mevert out of the bullpen as he recorded back-to-back walks that made the score 0-6 which ended his outing. Webster made another pitching change and entered in reliever Bauke Dalke as he got out of the inning with a groundout.

In the bottom of the second, Dalton Groves led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a bunt single by Jacob Charlson. Moments later, Braedan Trissell reached on an error that loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, James Theodore got the Gorloks on the scoreboard with an RBI single to right that scored Groves. 

In the top of the third, Dalke recorded a scoreless inning with two groundouts and a flyout to Theodore in center. In the bottom half, Wrubluski got the side started with a one-out infield single to second and advanced to second on a single to right by Adam Moser. Moments later, Groves drew a walk that loaded the bases. With one out and the bases juiced, Hieptas cut the deficit to 2-6 with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Wrubluski. 

In the top of the fourth, Dalke sent down the first two batters with strikeouts. However, the Vikings added three consecutive hits that produced a run that made the score 2-7. In the fifth, Dalke recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout. 

In the sixth, Dalke produced his third scoreless inning out of his outing that included a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout. In the bottom half, Groves led off with a single through the right side and advanced to third on an error by North Park. With one out and Groves on third, Ethan Wielt laced an RBI single to right center that scored Groves which made the score 3-7. 

In the top of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change to reliever Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he retired the first batter he faced. Shortly later, the Vikings loaded the bases and added a two-run single that made the score 3-9. Rompala-Matthews got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the eighth, both teams were held scoreless as Rompala-Matthews added a strikeout to his outing. In the ninth, Webster made a pitching change to Kendall Horton when the Viking added a run on a double-steal with runners on the corners that made the score 3-10 which generated the final score.

For the game, Theodore, Groves, and Charlson had two-hit performances while Theodore, Hietpas, and Wielt recorded an RBI each. On the mound, Armbrust pitched 1.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts. Dalke delivered 4.1 innings of relief and recorded four strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews pitched two innings and recorded three strikeouts. Horton closed out the final inning and recorded one strikeout.
