Gorloks Early Lead Falls Short To MSOE

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their 10-game homestand with the fourth game by hosting Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Gorloks took the early 4-2 lead but MSOE rallied a three-run fourth and nine-run eighth that generated the 4-14 defeat. Webster moves to 4-9 overall on the season.

Left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt took the mound for his fifth start of the season as he recorded a scoreless first inning with two flyouts while catcher Dalton Groves threw out a runner at second base. In the bottom half, Ryan Hartz got the side started with a one-out walk and advanced to second on an error on MSOE's right fielder off the bat of Adam Moser. With two runners on, Hartz and Moser executed a double-steal attempt and both runners advanced into scoring position. With one-out, Nick Wrubluski gave the Gorloks the 2-0 lead with a two-run double to left that scored Hartz and Moser. 

In the second inning, Greifelt recorded a scoreless inning behind two strikeouts and a throw out by Moser in right at second. In the bottom half, Ethan Wielt led off with a single and advanced to second on a one-out single to right by Braedan Trissell. With two outs, Hartz increased the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to left that scored Wielt. 

In the top of the third, MSOE recorded a lead off single and added a walk that put two runners on. With one out, the Raiders cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-run triple to center. Greifelt got out of the inning with a flyout double play by Moser in right. In the bottom half, Moser increased the lead to 4-2 with a leadoff solo homer.

In the top of the fourth, MSOE added four consecutive hits that produced three runs which generated the one-run deficit at 4-5. Greifelt got out of the inning with a strikeout. In the fifth, Greifelt allowed two singles and recorded two strikeouts which ended his outing. With two outs, Webster called reliever Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he got out of the inning with a strikeout.

In the sixth, both teams were held scoreless as Rompala-Matthews added a strikeout and a 5-4-3 doubleplay. In the seventh, he recorded another scoreless inning which included a flyout and consecutive strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Trissell and James Theodore recorded back-to-back singles but were both left stranded. 

In the eighth, the Raiders recorded an 8-run inning that started on RBI singles that made the score 4-7. With one out and the bases loaded, MSOE added a three-run double that made the score 4-10 which ended Rompala-Matthews outing. Webster then called upon reliever Bauer Dalke as he hit the first batter he faced. Following a wild pitch that put runners in scoring position, MSOE added a two-run double that made the score 4-12 that ended Dalke's outing. 

Webster then called upon right-handed reliever Collin Johnson as the Raiders increased the deficit to 4-14 with a two-run homer. Johnson got out of the inning with a groundout and a flyout. In the bottom of the eighth, Reid Hietpas led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a pinch-hit walk drawn by Andrew Xenakis. Moments later, Talan Hutchings drew a pinch-hit walk that loaded the bases but all runners were left stranded that ended the game.

 For the game, Hietpas and Trissell recorded two-hit performances while six different Gorloks recorded at least one hit. On the mound, Greifelt pitched 4.2 innings and recorded five strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews delivered 2.2 innings out relief and struckout four batters. Johnson recorded the final two outs of the game.
