Groves Records Multi-Homerun Performance; Gorloks Rally With Six-Run 8th Inning To Secure 11-4 Victory Over Hanover

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their 10-game homestand by hosting Hanover College. The Gorloks scored five runs in seven innings then erupted for a six-run eighth inning that earned an 11-4 victory over the Panthers. Webster improves to 6-9 overall on the season. 

First-year starting pitcher Colt Armbrust earned the start on the mound and got in a jam with a single, a walk, and an error. He recorded his first strikeout of the game and a flyout for the first two out of the inning. With runners in scoring position, Hanover struck first on the scoreboard on an error by Webster that made the score 0-1. Armbrust got out of the inning with a 6-4 putout. 

In the bottom of the first, James Theodore led off with a walk and advanced to second on an error by Hanover's pitcher. Shortly later, Theodore stole third and then scored on an error by the Panthers catcher that tied the game at 1-1. 

In the top of the second, Armbrust recorded a scoreless inning with a groundout and two strikeouts. In the bottom half, Dalton Groves put the Gorloks on top at 2-1 with a solo homer. 

In the top of the third, Hanover tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homer. In the bottom of the fourth, Groves got the side started with a one-out double to left center. Moments later, Nick Wrubluski gave the Gorloks the 3-2 advantage with an RBI single to right center that scored Groves. 

In the top of the fifth, the Panthers recorded a double then added a two-run blast that generated the 3-4 deficit. In the top of the sixth, Armbrust recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts and a groundout. In the bottom of the sixth, Groves tied the game at 4-4 with a solo homer. 

In the top of the seventh, Webster called upon reliever Kendall Horton out of the bullpen as he struckout the first batter he faced. Following a double and a hit-by-pitch, Horton's outing was over. Webster called upon reliever Wes Carter as he got out of the inning with 6-4 double play. 

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Andrew Xenakis led off and reached on an error. WU's Jonah Taylor entered the game as the pinch runner, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then got to third on an error by Hanover's pitcher. With Taylor on third, Theodore put the Gorloks on top at 5-4 with a sacrifice fly that scored Taylor.  

In the bottom of the eighth, the Gorloks erupted for a 6-run inning that started on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Reid Hietpas that scored Ryan Hartz. With the bases juiced, Ethan Wielt drove in Groves that made the score 7-4. With runners in scoring position, Charlie Pellicer increased the lead to 9-4 with a two-run single to center that scored Wrubluski and Hietpas. Two batters later and with two outs, Braedan Trissell blasted a two-run homerun that made the score 11-4. 

In the ninth, Carter closed out the game with a scoreless inning that included a flyout, a strikeout, and a groundout. 

For the game, Groves went a perfect 3-for-3 that included two solo homers and four runs. Trissell and Pellicer recorded one hit and two RBI's each. On the mound, Armbrust pitched six innings and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. Carter closed out the final 2.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
