Lanier’s Career-Best Hitting Performance; Greifelt’s Eight Strikeouts Power Past Greenville 15-5 In Conference Opener

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team opened conference play by hosting Greenville University. The Gorloks scored seven runs in the first five innings then closed out the game with a seven-run 8th inning for the 15-5 victory over the Panthers. WU's Matthew Lanier went 3-for-5 that included a two-run homer, four RBI's, and three runs. Southpaw ace Ryan Greifelt recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just one hit over six innings of work. With the victory, Webster improves to 7-9 overall and 1-0 in conference play. 

Greifelt earned his sixth appearance on the mound and opened the game with a scoreless inning with two groundouts and a looking strikeout. In the bottom half, Adam Moser got the side started with a two-out single to center then stole second. Moments later, Dalton Groves reached first on an error by Greenville which allowed Moser to score that took the 1-0 early lead. With two outs, Ryan Hartz gave the Gorloks the 2-0 advantage with an RBI double to left center that scored Groves. 

In the top of the second, Greifelt recorded his second consecutive scoreless inning with a groundout, a strikeout, and a fielder's choice play. In the bottom half, Reid Hietpas led off and drew a walk. Moments later, Lanier increased the Gorlok lead to 4-0 with a two-run blast over the right field wall. That hit by Lanier marks his first collegiate hit. 

In the top of the third, Greifelt kept the Panthers off the board with a groundout, a strikeout, and a flyout. In the bottom half, Groves laced a double to the gap in right center but he was left stranded. 

In the top of the fourth, Greifelt sent down Greenville in order with a groundout and back-to-back swinging strikeouts. In the bottom frame, Hietpas led off and was awarded first base after he was hit by the pitch. With one out, Hietpas stole second. With two outs, James Theodore laced an RBI single to center that increased the lead to 5-0. 

In the top of the fifth, Greifelt sent down the Panthers in order with two strikeouts and a groundout. In the bottom half, Nick Wrubluski got the side started with a one-out hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a single by Hietpas. Following a wild pitch that advanced both runners, Lanier ripped an RBI single to center that scored Wrubluski that made the score 6-0. With two outs, Jacob Charlson reached base on an error by Greenville that allowed Lanier to score for the 7-0 advantage. 

In the top of the sixth, Greifelt recorded his sixth consecutive scoreless inning as he recorded a flyout, a groundout, and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Groves laced a two-out single and advanced to third on a double by Ryan Hartz. However, both runners were left stranded and kept the score at 7-0. 

In the seventh, Webster made a pitching change to Kendall Horton as Greenville got on the scoreboard with a leadoff solo homer that made the score 7-1. Horton followed up with a strikeout and then got out of the inning with 4-6-3 doubleplay. In the bottom half, Charlson blasted a solo homer that increased the lead to 8-1.

In the top of the ninth, Greenville got two runners on with a walk and an error by Webster then followed up with an RBI double that made the score 8-2. Following a strikeout by Horton, the Panthers cut the lead to 8-5 with a three-run homerun. 

Webster then called upon reliever Wes Carter out of the bullpen as he worked out of a walk and an error with a strikeout that kept the score at 8-5. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Braedan Trissell led off with a walk and immediately stole second. With Trissell in scoring position, Moser ripped an RBI single up the middle that made the score 9-5. Following a failed pick off attempt that advanced Moser to second, Groves singled with a bunt. With runners on the corners, Hartz laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Moser and increased the lead to 10-5. 

With two outs, Hietpas kept the inning going as he was awarded first base after he was hit by the pitch. With two runners on, Lanier laced an RBI single up that middle that scored Groves for the 11-5 lead. Moments later, Talan Hutchings drew a walk that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Theodore drew a walk that scored Hietpas which made the score 12-5. With the bases still loaded, Trissell cleared the bases with a three-run triple off the center field wall which generated the 15-5 final. 

For the game and in addition to Lanier, Groves recorded three hits and two runs while Hartz had two hits and two RBI's. Trissell delivered the game-ending triple while Charlson blasted a solo homer.

On the mound and in addition to Greifelt, Horton delivered one and one-third innings and tallied two strikeouts. Carter recorded the final two outs of the game.
