Gorloks Baseball Capture Sweep Over Panthers With Two Victories

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball closed out their conference series against Greenville University with a doubleheader. The Gorloks captured the sweep over the Panthers with victories by the scores of 8-6 and 5-1. In game one, Carter Hunt pitched 5.2 innings and recorded eight strikeouts. In game two, Colt Armbrust set a new career-high of 11 strikeouts over seven innings of work. 

Game 1: Webster 8, Greenville 6
Hunt made his sixth appearance on the mound and opened the game with a scoreless inning that included a sacrifice bunt putout and back-to-back strikeouts. 

In the second, Hunt sent down the Panthers in order with three consecutive strikeouts. In the bottom half, Nick Wrubluski gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead with a solo homer. 

In the third, Greenville led off with a double to left and then followed up with an RBI single to right that tied the game at 1-1. Following those two batters, Hunt sent down the next three batters that kept the game tied. 

In the bottom of the third, Talan Hutchings led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a double to left center by James Theodore. With runners in scoring position, Braedan Trissell gave Webster the 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored Hutchings. With two outs and Theodore on third, Dalton Groves put the Gorloks up 3-1 with an RBI single to left. 

In the top of the fourth, Hunt had another quick inning that included two groundouts and a strikeout. In the fifth, Greenville recorded three consecutive one-out hits (single, RBI double, and RBI double) and took the 4-3 lead. Hunt got out of the inning with a flyout and a strikeout that kept the one-run deficit. In the bottom of the fifth, Hutchings led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Theodore. With two outs and runners on the corners, Groves tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to left that scored Hutchings. 

In the top of the sixth, Greenville took the 5-4 lead on a lead off solo homer. Hunt followed up with a popout and a groundout that ended his outing. Webster called upon reliever Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Theodore got the inning going with a one-out single to center and then stole second, Following a walk drawn by Adam Moser, Groves laced an infield single that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Ryan Hartz gave the Gorloks the 6-5 lead with a two-run single to left. Following a balk and walk issued by Greenville that loaded the bases, Wrubluski drew an RBI walk that pushed the lead to 7-5. 

In the top of the eighth, Rompala-Matthews sent down the Panthers in order that included a strikeout and two groundouts. In the bottom, Theodore got it started with a one-out single to center, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Moser increased the Gorloks lead to 8-5 with an RBI single to left.  

In the top of the ninth, Greenville loaded the bases on an error, a single, and a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, the Panthers added a run on a hit-by-pitch allowed by Rompala-Matthews that generated the final score of 6-8. 

For the game, Groves went 3-for-5 with two RBI's while Theodore recorded three hits and three runs. Wrubluski went 1-for-3 that included a solo homer and two RBI's.

On the mound, Hunt pitched 5.2 innings and recorded eight strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews closed out the final 3.1 innings and recorded five strikeouts. 


Game 2: Webster 5, Greenville 1
Armbrust made his sixth appearance on the mound and opened the game with consecutive strikeouts and a flyout for a scoreless inning. In the second, Armbrust recorded back-to-back strikeouts for the first two outs of the inning. He worked out of a double and a walk with a strikeout for his second scoreless inning of the game. 

In the top of the third, Armbrust recorded two strikeouts when Groves caught a runner trying to steal second that kept the game scoreless. In the bottom, Jonah Taylor reached base on a dropped third-strike error by Greenville, then stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Theodore cracked the scoreless contest with an RBI single up the middle that scored Taylor for the 1-0 lead. 

In the top of the fourth, Greenville tied the game at one apiece with a lead off solo homer. Following a single, Armbrust recorded his third scoreless inning of the game with two strikeouts and a groundout back to himself. 

In the top of the fifth, Armbrust had another scoreless inning which included two strikeouts and a foul off to Groves behind the dish. In the bottom, Reid Hietpas led off with a double to left center. Moments later, Taylor laid down a bunt single that advanced Hietpas to third but a wild throwing error by Greenville allowed Hietpas to score and Taylor moved to second. Following a stolen third base by Taylor, Trissell executed the squeeze bunt that allowed Taylor to score that made the score 4-1. 

In the sixth, Armbrust sent down the Panthers in order with two flyouts and a groundout. In the seventh, he shut down the Panthers again that included a flyout, a foul out to third, and a groundout which ended his outing. 

In the eighth, Webster called upon reliever Wes Carter out of the bullpen as he recorded a scoreless inning with groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Moser led off with an infield single to second. Moments later, Groves smashed an RBI double to right center that allowed Moser to come all the way around from first to score that made the score 5-1. In the top of the ninth, Carter shut down the Panthers and closed out the game with three strikeouts. 

For the game, Theodore led the team with two hits and drove in one. Groves and Trissell recorded one RBI each. On the mound, Armbrust pitched seven complete innings and fanned 11 batters. Carter closed out the final two innings and struckout four batters.
