Three Pitchers Shut Out Blackburn; Hietpas’s Sacrifice Fly Takes Game One From Beavers

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued conference play by hosting Blackburn College for a single-game. The Gorloks rallied behind dominant pitching performances and a sacrifice fly by Reid Hietpas that took game one from the Beavers by the score of 1-0. 

Left-handed pitcher Zach Mevert earned his first start of the season and opened the game with a scoreless inning that included a groundout and two strikeouts. In the bottom half, James Theodore led off with a single through the right side but got out on a fielder's choice play at second. Braedan Trissell stole second but was left stranded. 

In the second, Mevert worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a fielder's choice groundout at second that kept the game scoreless. 

In the top of the third, Mevert sent down the Beavers in order with a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout. In the bottom, Theodore recorded a two-out single to right but was left at first. 

In the top of the fourth, Webster made a pitching change and entered in reliever Wes Carter. Carter made a fielder's choice play at second for the first out of the inning and got out of the inning with a 6u doubleplay by Trissell.  

In the top of the fifth, Blackburn recorded a single but Carter recorded another scoreless inning with two groundouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Reid Hietpas laced a double to left and Talan Hutchings drew a walk but both runners were left stranded. 

In the sixth, Carter sent down the Beavers in order that included three consecutive groundouts.

In the top of the seventh, Carter retired the side in order with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Ryan Hartz led off with a walk and advanced to third on a double to right center by Nick Wrubluski. With runners in scoring position, Hietpas drove in Hartz with a sacrifice flyout to right that gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead. 

In the top of the eighth, Carter sent down the first batter he saw with a strikeout which ended his great outing. Webster then called upon reliever Elijah Rompala-Matthews as he recorded two flyouts that ended the inning. 

In the top of the ninth, Rompala-Matthews sent down the Beavers in order that included a flyout and two groundouts. 

For the game, Theodore led the team with two hits with Wrubluski, Hietpas, and Hutchings recorded one hit each. Hietpas's sacrifice fly was the only run scored of the game by both teams.

On the mound, Mevert pitched three innings, struckout three batters, and allowed no run. Carter delivered 4.1 innings of relief that recorded two strikeouts. Rompala-Matthews closed out the final 1.2 innings and allowed no runs.
