Gorloks Rallied In Late Innings For 5-4 Victory Over Salve Regina

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team continued spring break play with a contest against Salve Regina. The Gorloks rallied in the fifth and sixth innings with five runs that defeated Salve Regina by the final score of 5-4. With the victory, Webster improves to 6-10 overall. 

Webster opened this neutral site decision with the bats as Sophie Errante recorded a lead off walk and later stole second. With two outs, the Gorloks loaded the bases with walks drawn by Madi Stichling and Vanessa Saenz, but Webster did not score. 

In the bottom half, Penn took the circle for her fifth appearance of the season and recorded a scoreless inning with a groundout, popout, and a strikeout. In the second, both teams were held scoreless as Penn recorded a strikeout, a fielder's choice, and a groundout. 

In the bottom of the third, Salve Regina recorded a single and that runner advanced to second on a Webster error. With two outs, the Seahawks struck first on the scoreboard with an RBI double. The next batter for Salve laced an RBI triple to center that generated the 0-2 deficit. Penn got out of the inning with a groundout. 

In the top of the fourth, Ava Reinecke led off with a double to left and later stole third on a walk drawn by Kelsey Sommers but both runners were left stranded. In the bottom of the fourth, Webster made a pitching change to Kailey Rushman as she worked out of a jam with an inning-ending doubleplay which was a 7-4 putout. 

In the top of the fifth, Errante led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Puentes. With two outs, Errante advanced to third on an error by Salve. With runners on the corners, Webster got on the scoreboard on a wild pitch that scored Errante. The inning continued with a walk by Madi Stichling and a single by Reinecke. With the bases loaded, Saenz tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored Puentes. With two outs, Brystol Klossner put the Groloks on top at 3-2 with an RBI single to center. In the bottom of the fifth, Rushman recorded her second consecutive scoreless inning that included two flyouts and a groundout.

In the top of the sixth, Puentes got the inning started with two outs and reached base on an error by Salve and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Moments later, Isabelle Loiben entered the game as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single that scored Puentes that made the score 4-2. Shortly later, the Gorloks loaded the bases with a wild pitch, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, Loiben gave the Gorloks the 5-2 lead as she scored on a wild pitch. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Rushman recorded her third straight scoreless inning that included two fielder's choice plays and a groundout. In the bottom of the seventh, the Seahawks recorded three consecutive hits that produced two runs that made the score 5-4. Rushman closed out the game with a groundout that generated the victory.  


For the game, Reinecke led the team with two hits while Puentes scored twice. Errante, Loiben, and Klossner recorded the other three hits for Webster. Loiben, Saenz, and Klossner recorded an RBI each.

In the circle, Penn pitched three innings and recorded two strikeouts. Rushman delivered four innings of relief and recorded nine groundouts and two runs.
