Wielt and Wrubluski Blast Two Homers Each; Hunt Records Season-High 11 Strikeouts In Split Against Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Webster University baseball team continued conference play with a doubleheader at Spalding University. The Gorloks earned a split against the Golden Eagles with a 7-4 victory in 11 innings but dropped the night cap decision by the score of 5-7. With the split, Webster moves to 24-12 overall and 18-2 in conference play. 

Game 1: Webster 7, Spalding 4
The Gorloks opened the doubleheader with the bats as James Theodore led off with a single to left but got out trying to steal second. In the bottom of the first, Ryan Greifelt sent down the Golden Eagles in order with two groundouts and a strikeout. 

In the top of the second, Nick Wrubluski led off with a walk but got out at second on a fielder's choice play. With two outs, Talan Hutchings laced a single down the right field line as Reid Heiptas advanced to third. With runners on the corners, the Gorloks attempted a double steal but Heiptas was thrown out at home by Spalding's second baseman that ended the inning. 

In the bottom of the second, Greifelt recorded two quick outs with a groundout and a popout. With two outs, Spalding recorded a single and a double that put two runners in scoring position. Greifelt worked out of the jam with a strikeout that kept the game scoreless. 

In the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles recorded three consecutive hits that loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Spalding took the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice flyout. Greifelt got out of the inning with a fielder's choice that kept the 1-0 deficit. 

In the top of the fourth, Wrubluski tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out solo homer to center. Moments later, Hieptas gave the Gorloks the 2-1 lead with a solo homer to center. In the bottom half, Greifelt sent down the Golden Eagles in order with back-to-back strikeouts and a popout. 

In the fifth inning, both teams did not score a run as Griefelt recorded a 1-2-3 inning with a flyout, a strikeout, and a groundout. 

In the top of the sixth, Adam Moser laced a one-out infield single to third but was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. Dalton Groves reached base on a walk but was left stranded. In the bottom frame, Greifelt had a quick inning and recorded a flyout, a lineout, and groundout that kept the lead at 2-1. 

In the top of the seventh, Hieptas led off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a double by Ryan Hartz. With runners on the corners, Hutching drove in Hieptas that increased the lead to 3-1. With one out, Ethan Wielt reached base on an infield single that put runners on first and second. With two runners on, Charlie Pellicer laced a single through the left side that loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Theodore stretched the Gorlok lead to 4-1 with an RBI single to left that scored Hutchings. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Spalding got two runners on base then added a two-run single to right that made the score 4-3. Greifelt got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout that kept the score at 4-3. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Greifelt recorded two quick outs with a groundout and foul out to right. Spalding followed up with a single and a walk that ended Greifelt's outing. Webster called upon reliever Wes Carter as he got out of the inning with a strikeout that kept the score at 4-3. 

In the top of the ninth, Wielt and Pellicer each recorded a single but Spalding turned a 6-4-3 doubleplay that ended the side for the Gorloks. In the bottom frame, Carter allowed a walk and wild pitch that put a Golden Eagle in scoring position. With two outs, Spalding tied the game a 4-4 with an RBI single to right. Carter got out the inning with a flyout.

In the 10th inning, both teams did not score a run as Carter recorded a foul out to first and two flyouts. 

In the top of the 11th inning, Hieptas led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single to left by Hartz. With two runners on, Hutchings put the Gorloks on top at 6-4 with an RBI single as Hartz scored on a throwing error by Spalding's left fielder. With no outs and Hutchings on second, Wielt moved Hutchings to third with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Theodore laced an RBI single through the left side that scored Hutchings and increased the lead to 7-4. 

In the bottom of the 11th, Carter shut the door on the Golden Eagles with a strikeout and got 5-4-3 doubleplay that ended the game.   
 
For the game, Theodore went 3-for-6 with two RBI's while Hutchings went 2-for-5 with two RBI's. Hieptas led the team with three runs as Hutching scored twice. 

On the mound, Greifelt pitched 7.2 innings, recorded seven strikeouts, and allowed two earned runs. Carter closed out the final 3.1 innings, recorded four strikeouts, and allowed just two hits. 


Game 2: Webster 5, Spalding 7
The nightcap decision got started with a one-out hit-by-pitch taken by Moser as Moser advanced to second on a single by Groves. With one out, both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. With runners in scoring position, Wrubluski gave the Gorloks the early 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout that scored Moser. 

In the bottom of the first, Carter Hunt earned the start on the mound and struckout the first batter he faced. Following that out, Spalding loaded the bases on a Gorlok error, a single, and a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, Spalding tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single through the left side. Hunt escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts that kept the score tied at 1-1. 

In the second inning, both teams were held scoreless as Hunt recorded a groundout and a strikeout. Groves caught a Golden Eagle trying to steal second that ended the side. 

In the bottom of the third, Spalding recorded a lead off double to left and that runner advanced to third on a wild pitch issued by Hunt. With a runner on third and one out, Spalding took the 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly. Hunt got out of the inning with a fielder's choice play that kept the score at 2-1. 

In the top of the fourth, Wrubluski tied the game at 2-2 with a lead off solo homer to left. In the bottom half, Hunt sent down the Golden Eagles in order with a groundout to first and back-to-back strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth, Wielt blasted a lead off solo homer over the left center field wall that put the Gorloks on top at 3-2. In the bottom frame, Hunt allowed a lead off single but followed up with a strikeout and a flyout. Groves threw out a runner trying to steal second that ended the inning. 

In the sixth, both teams did not score a run as Hunt recorded all three outs himself with three strikeouts. In the seventh, both teams were held scoreless as Hunt recorded two groundouts and a foul out to third. 

In the top of the eighth, Moser led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Groves. Following an intentional walk that awarded Wrubluski first, AJ Simmons entered the game as a pinch runner. With runners on the corners and one out, Spalding's pitcher had a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Moser to score that pushed the lead to 4-2. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Spalding recorded a five-run inning with an RBI single, a two-run single, and an RBI double that generated the 7-4 deficit. Webster used three relievers in the inning as Kendal Horton ended the inning with a strikeout. 

In the top of the ninth, Wielt belted a one-out solo homer over the center field wall which was the final Gorlok run of the game.

For the game, Wielt recorded three hits while Moser, Groves, Wrubluski, Hutchings, and Pellicer had one hit each. Wrubluski and Wielt drove in two RBI's each. 

On the mound, Hunt pitched seven innings, recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts, and allowed two earned runs. The Gorloks used three relievers as Elijah Rompala-Matthews was credited with the loss.
