Saenz’s Four RBI Day; Rushman and Stichling Deal Complete Games In Sweep Over Red Devils

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play with a doubleheader at Eureka College. The Gorloks swept the Red Devils by the final scores of 3-2 and 8-0. With the victories, Webster improves to 10-2 in SLIAC play and currently rank in a tie for first place in the conference. 

Game 1: Webster 3, Eureka 2
First-year pitcher Kailey Rushman earned the start in the circle as she recorded a scoreless first inning that included a flyout, a strikeout, and popout to Ava Reinecke behind the plate. In the bottom of the second, Rushman recorded her second consecutive scoreless inning with two strikeouts and a batter inference. 

In the top of the third, Brie Hale led off with a walk but got out on a lineout doubleplay. With two outs, Sophie Errante reached on an error and came all the way around to score on an RBI single by Vanessa Saenz for the 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Rushman had a quick inning that included two strikeouts and a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop. 

In the top of the fourth, Addison Penn laced a single to right field but was caught stealing that ended the side. In the bottom frame, Rushman recorded her fourth consecutive scoreless inning with a popout and two groundouts that kept the lead at 1-0.

In the top of the fifth, Isabelle Loiben ripped a two-out single to center but was caught stealing that ended the inning. In the bottom half, Rushman allowed a lead off single but followed up with a strikeout, a line out, and a groundout that kept the Red Devils scoreless. 

In the top of the sixth, Errante led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Saenz, then stole third. With two outs, Reinecke reached base on an error by Eureka which allowed Errante to score that pushed the lead to 2-0. In the bottom half, Eureka recorded a walk and a single. With two runners on, Rushman got a flyout to right which moved both runners into scoring position. Moments later, Eureka tied the game at 2-2 on a Webster error. Rushman got out of the inning with a popout to second. 

In the top of the seventh, Natalie Puentes drew a walk and Loiben ripped a double to left but both runners were left stranded. In the bottom frame, Rushman recorded a flyout and a groundout. Moments later, Eureka added a double to right that put the winning run on second. Rushman got out of the inning unscaved with a flyout to center that forced extra innings. 

In the top of the eighth, Errante started on second base then stole third. With no outs, Saenz hit a groundball to the Eureka's first baseman as the first baseman made a throwing error at home that allowed Errante to score that gave the Gorloks the 3-2 lead. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Eureka laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runner to third base. With a runner on third, Rushman recorded a flyout to center that kept the Eureka runner on third base. With two outs, Rushman recorded a groundout to Paige Vogelgesang at short that earned the victory. 

For the game, Rushman pitched a complete game, recorded six strikeouts, and allowed just two runs. In the box, Saenz went 1-for-3 with two RBI's while Loiben recorded two hits. 

Game 2: Webster 8, Eureka 0
Loiben led off game two with a walk and advanced to third on a double to right by Puentes. With runners in scoring position, Saenz laced an RBI single to right that scored Loiben for the 1-0 lead. With one out, Kacey Ekstrom increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI groundout. With one out and Saenz on third, Brystol Klossner stretched the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to center. Following a single by Marah Schotz, Vogelgesang belted an RBI double to left that pushed the lead to 4-0. 

In the bottom of the first, Madi Stichling earned the start in the circle and recorded a scoreless inning with a strikeout and two groundouts. 

In the second inning, both teams were retired in order as Stichling recorded a flyout, a strikeout, and a groundout. 

In the top of the third, Reinecke led off with a double to right and advanced to third on a single to center by Ekstrom. With no outs and two runners on base, Klossner ripped a two-run double down the right field line that increased the lead to 6-0. In the bottom half, Stichling recorded her third consecutive scoreless inning with a popout, a groundout, and a strikeout. 

In the top of the fourth, Puentes got the inning started with a two-out single up the middle. Moments later, Saenz smashed an RBI triple down the right field line that scored Puentes and scored on a throwing error by Eureka that increased the lead to 8-0. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Stichling had a quick inning and kept the Red Devils scoreless with a flyout and two groundouts. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Stichling allowed a lead off single but closed the game out with a popout to third and back-to-back flyouts that earned the victory. 

For the game, Stichling pitched a complete game, recorded three strikeouts, and allowed just three hits. In the box, Saenz went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs while Puentes and Klossner added two hits each. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Sunday, April 26th hosting Spalding University for a doubleheader starting at 12:00PM at St. Joseph's High School in St. Louis, Missouri.
