Softball Splits Home Series Against Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play by hosting Spalding University on Sunday for a doubleheader. The Gorloks won the first game 12-11 but dropped the nightcap decision 4-8. With the split, Webster moves to 18-19 overall and 11-3 in SLIAC play.

Game 1: Webster 12, Spalding 11
Sophomore pitcher Adriana Rodriguez got the start in the circle and recorded a scoreless first inning with two groundouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Sophie Errante and Vanessa Saenz recorded back-to-back one-out singles when Ainsley Hinz gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead with an RBI double. Moments later, Ava Reinecke blasted a three-run homerun that made the score 4-0.

In the top of the second, Rodriguez struckout the first batter she faced. Following a single and a walk, Spalding recorded an RBI double that made the score 4-2. Rodriguez got out of the inning with a flyout and a groundout.

In the bottom of the second, Isabelle Loiben laced a one-out double to right and advanced to third on a single to left by Errante. With one out, Loiben scored on a wild pitch that pushed the lead to 5-2. With Errante on second, Saenz singled which scored Errante as Saenz advanced to third on a throwing error by Spalding's centerfielder for the 6-2 lead. With Saenz on third, Hinz ripped an RBI single to right center that scored Saenz and increased the lead to 7-2. Shortly later, Kacey Ekstrom recorded a two-out double to left center that advanced Hinz to third. With runners in scoring position, Addison Penn smashed a two-run single to right that stretched the lead to 9-2. 

In the top of the third, Spalding recorded a lead off single, stole second, as that runner advanced to third on a flyout. Following a walk, Spalding scored a run on a wild pitch that made the score 9-3. Rodriguez got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. 

In the top of the fourth, Spalding recorded two singles and two walks that pushed the score to 9-4. Following that run, Webster made a pitching change to Penn and the Golden Eagles made the score 9-5 with a fielder's choice out. With one out, Spalding recorded an RBI single that made the score 9-6. Reinecke got the second out of the inning by throwing out a runner at third. Penn recorded the final out of the inning with a groundout back to herself. 

In the top of the fifth, Spalding recorded a single, a double, then an RBI single to center that made the score 9-7. With runners in scoring position, Penn issued a wild pitch that cut the lead to 9-8  Penn got out the inning with a strikeout and a flyout. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Paige Vogelgesang got the side with a one-out single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brie Hale. Following a walk by Loiben, Errante ripped an RBI single to right that scored Vogelgesang that pushed the lead to 10-8. With two runners on, Saenz followed up with an RBI single to left that scored Loiben for the 11-8 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, Spalding recorded a lead off single and then stole second. Following a double that put runners in scoring position, the Golden Eagles cut the lead to 11-10 with a two-run single. Following a fielder's choice out, the Gorloks recorded an error that allowed a run to score which tied the game at 11. Penn got out of the inning with a popout to short. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Reinecke led off with a double to right center when Olivia Hartupee entered the game as a pinch runner. Hartupee then advanced to third on a groundout by Ekstrom. With one out, Penn drove in Hartupee that took the 12-11 lead. 

In the top of the seventh, Webster called upon senior Madi Stichling in the circle as she sent down the Golden Eagles in order with two groundouts and a flyout and earned the save. 
 
For the game, Errante went a perfect 4-for-4 while Reinecke went 2-for-4 with a career-high three RBI's. In addition, Saenz went 3-for-4 with two runs while Hinz went 2-for-4 with two runs. In the circle, Rodriguez and Penn pitched three innings each as Rodriguez recorded three strikeouts. Stichling pitched the final inning and earned the save. 

Game 2: Webster 4, Spalding 8
Stichling got the start in the circle for game two and opened the game with a scoreless inning that included two groundouts and a popout. In the bottom half, Loiben was hit by the pitch, Errante singled to left, and both student-athletes moved into scoring position by Saenz. The Gorloks did not score a run as Spalding got out the inning with a fielder's choice out at home and a groundout. 

In the top of the second, Spalding took the 1-0 lead with a leadoff solo homer to center. Stichling then sent down the next three batters with two strikeouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Natalie Puentes and Vogelgesang recorded singles but neither student-athlete scored that kept that deficit at 1-0. 

In the top of the third, Stichling worked out of a jam and recorded a scoreless inning popout to third, a popout to short, and a flyout to center. In the bottom half, Errante laced a single to left but got out at second on a fielder's choice. With one out, Reinecke ripped a single to center that moved Saenz to second. Following a fielder's choice out, Puentes laced a single to center but Spalding threw out Brystol Klossner at home that kept the Gorloks off the scoreboard. 

In the top of the fourth, Spalding recorded a leadoff double to right then followed up with a two-run homerun to left that generated the 0-3 deficit. Following that blast, Webster made a pitching change to Hinz and she got out of the inning with three consecutive groundouts. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Vogelgesang laced a one-out single to left and advanced to second by Hartupee. With two runners on, Loiben recorded a single to center that loaded the bases. With out and the bases loaded, Saenz ripped a two-run to left by Saenz that made the score 2-3. 

In the top of the fifth, Spalding recorded two singles and two stolen bases that led to an RBI single to center that made the score 2-4. With runners in scoring position, the Golden Eagles recorded an RBI single that pushed the deficit to 2-5. Following that run, Penn took over in the circle as Spalding increased the deficit to 2-6 on a throw down to second steal attempt by Reinecke as the runner on third scored on the throw down. Following a walk and a single, Spalding increased the deficit to 2-7 with an RBI single to right. Penn got out of the inning with a flyout to left. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Klossner led off with a single to left and advanced to second on an error by Spalding's left fielder. Moments later, Puentes laced a double to right center that moved Klossner to third. With one out and runners in scoring position, Vogelgesang belted an RBI double to left center that scored Klossner and made the score 3-7. 

In the top of the sixth, Spalding loaded the bases with two hit-by-pitches and a walk then added an RBI groundout that made the score 3-8. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Puentes got the side started with a one-out single then scored on an RBI double to left by Vogelgesang for the final run of the game. 

For the game, Puentes and Vogelgesang recorded career-high four hit performances while Saenz and Errante had two hits each. Saenz and Vogelgesang had two RBI's each. In the circle, Stichling pitched three innings and recorded two strikeouts. Hinz delivered 1.1 innings of relief and had one strikeout. Penn closed out the game and recorded two strikeouts.
