Rushman Delivers Complete Game; Penn and Saenz Record Career-High Three Hits Each In 9-6 Victory Over Rutgers-Newark

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team continued spring break play with a decision against the University of Rutgers-Newark. The Gorloks rallied with a four-run sixth inning that beat the Scarlet Raiders by the score of 9-6. WU's Kailey Rushman pitched a complete game while Addison Penn and Vanessa Saenz recorded a career-high three hits each.

Webster opened this neutral site decision with the bats as Brie Hale reached base on a one-out error by the Scarlet Raiders. First-year Isabelle Loiben got the Gorloks on the scoreboard with an RBI double to left center that scored Hale. In the bottom half, first-year pitcher Rushman earned the start in the circle and recorded a scoreless inning with a fielder's choice, a strikeout, and a flyout. 

In the top of the second, Saenz led off with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a passed ball. With Saenz on second, Penn reached first on an error by Rutgers-Newark that allowed Saenz to score that generated the 2-0 lead. Following a stolen base by Penn, Paige Vogelgesang laced a single to left that moved Penn to third as Vogelgesang took second on the play. With one out and runners in scoring position, Sophie Errante stretched the lead to 3-0 with an RBI groundout that scored Penn. 

In the bottom half, the Scarlet Raiders recorded consecutive hits; a double and a single that made the score 3-1. Following that run, Rushman worked out a jam with a popout and two groundouts. 

In the top of the third, Loiben led off with an infield single but got out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kacey Ekstrom. With two outs, Saenz ripped a single to right when an error by the right fielder allowed Ekstrom to score that made the score 4-1. With Saenz on first, Penn laced an RBI single through the right side as Saenz came around to score on the play which increased the lead to 5-1. 

In the bottom of the third, Rutgers-Newark recorded three consecutive singles that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, the Scarlet Raiders added a run on a sacrifice flyout that made the score 5-2. Rushman got out the inning with a strikeout. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Scarlet Raiders drew two walks and recorded a single that loaded the bases. With one out, Rutgers-Newark added a run with a sacrifice fly for the score of 5-3. With two outs, the Scarlet Raiders tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run single. Moments later, Rutgers-Newark took the lead 6-5 lead with an RBI infield single. Rushman got out of the inning with a lineout. 

In the top of the fifth, Saenz and Penn recorded singles to right field but were left stranded on the corners. In the bottom half, Rushman sent down the Scarlet Raiders in order with consecutive groundouts and a popout to second. 

In the top of the sixth, Vogelgesang led off with an infield single to short and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Hale. Following a pitching change by the Scarlet Raiders, Loiben drew a walk that loaded the bases. With two outs and the bases juiced, Ekstrom tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI single through the left side that scored Vogelgesang. With the bases still loaded, Saenz drew a walk that put the Gorloks on top at 7-6 as Hale scored on the play. With the bases loaded and two outs, Penn ripped a two-run single to center for the 9-6 lead as Loiben and Ekstrom both scored. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Rushman allowed a single but retired the next three batters with a lineout, flyout, and a strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, Rushman shut the door with two groundouts and a looking strikeout that secured the victory. 

For the game, Saenz and Penn recorded three hits each while Loiben and Vogelgesang had two hits each. Penn recorded a career-high three RBI's while Errante, Loiben, Ekstrom, and Saenz drove in one each. In the circle, Rushman pitched a complete game and recorded four strikeouts.
