EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The men's soccer team was back in action Sunday evening when they traveled across the river to take on the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks fell to the Cougars, who are an NCAA Division I program, by a final score of 3-0.
Webster finished the game with eight shots, including three on goal, while SIUE recorded 17 shots with six on target. The Cougars also held a 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and created some early opportunities, with Scott Price and Finn Rohl each putting shots on goal in the opening seven minutes. SIUE would get on the board in the 18th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars would add to their lead in the 27th minute, taking a 2-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Webster continued to battle and created several chances late in the half, including a shot from Alberto Duque Gonzalez that hit the crossbar.
SIUE extended its lead early in the second half with a goal in the 54th minute. The Cougars would hold Webster scoreless for the remainder of the match to secure the 3-0 victory.
Jakub Samelko started in goal for Webster and recorded three saves in 79:25 of action. Charlie Leahy played the final 10:35 in goal.
The Gorloks will return to action on Wednesday, September 23 when they host Simpson College at 4 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
