CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Blackburn College for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Beavers by a final score of 2-0 to improve to 1-1-4 on the season and 1-0 in SLIAC play. With the loss, Blackburn falls to 3-6-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
The Gorloks outshot the Beavers 19-7 with Webster putting 12 shots on target compared to five for Blackburn. Webster also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Gorloks broke through in the 32nd minute when Bashor Soufi put Webster on the scoreboard with his first goal of the season. Soufi created a pair of shots on the afternoon, with both finding the target.
Just a few minutes into the second half, Alberto Duque Gonzalez doubled the Gorloks' advantage with his first goal of the afternoon. Duque Gonzalez also recorded two shots, both of which were on target, as Webster took a 2-0 lead.
The Gorloks had an opportunity to open the scoring in the first half when Scott Price was awarded a penalty kick in the 19th minute, but his attempt was saved by Blackburn goalkeeper Brayden Keys.
Charlie Leahy and Jakub Samelko split time in goal for the Gorloks. Leahy recorded three saves in the first half before Samelko added one save in the second half as Webster recorded its first shutout of the season.
The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Thursday, October 1st when they host Lyon College (Ark.) for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. at WWT Soccer Park.
