Webster drops pair on day one of St. Louis Invitational

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorlok softball squad dropped a pair of games today in the St. Louis Invitational 4-3 to Central College (Iowa) and conference foe Maryville 3-1 at Blackburn Park. The losses snapped WU's two game winning streak and dropped them back to .500
In the opener against Central (9-6), the Gorloks (8-8) fell behind in the first on lead off homer off the bat of Kelly Harris to left center field. Webster took its lone lead of the game in the third on Dana Vahey's third home run of the season to center scoring Nancy LaRose to make it 2-1. The Dutch tied it in the bottom of the inning with a two outs on a single to first and tried to catch WU napping by trying to score a runner from second but Autumn Sensing made a great throw to Vahey who tagged out the runner as she was sliding by to keep the game tied.
CC retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on Harris's second home run of the game, this one being a two run shot and eventual game winner, making it 4-2. The Gorloks got one of those runs back courtesy of a lead off home run down the left field line off the bat of Kelsey Washam but got no closer as Central's Kiley Lythberg retired Webster's final six hitters of the game after Washam's long ball.
Gina Trapani suffered the loss allowing all four runs on just three hits in six innings of work to fall to 4-2 on the year. Trapani struggled with her control walking five hitters while striking out four.
The Gorloks finished the game with only four hits led by Vahey with two.

In the second game of the day WU jumped on top in the first by playing small ball when Vahey led off the game with a single, then stole second and moved to third on a ground ball to the pitcher. She scored Samantha Dittman's sacrifice fly to right. The Saints (12-11) threatened in the first two innings but Webster's defense stiffened not allowing the runs to score. Maryville got on the board in the third with a pair of runs on two out single to second which the batter just beat out.
It appeared the Saints were posed to break the game open in the fifth with runners at second and third and no one out but the Gorloks got a double play on fly ball to LaRose who fired a strike into Vahey nailing the runner at the plate. It appeared WU would get of the inning with no damage but a dropped pop up on the infield allowed the run to score. Webster had the tying runs on base in the sixth but were unable to score when Dittman was robbed of a hit by a diving catch by the right fielder and a ground out to short ended the inning. The Gorloks would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh but a strikeout ended the game.
Megan Sperry received the loss giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings of work. Vahey once again the offense recording two of the team's three hits in the game.
Webster is scheduled to play St. Scholastica (Minn.) tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in the final game of the St. Louis Invitational depending on the weather. Stay tuned to www.websterathletics.com for more information.
