Softball sweeps Westminster 8-3 and 6-2

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks picked up a doubleheader sweep over Westminster 8-3 and 6-2 on Thursday afternoon at Blackburn Park in Webster Groves. With the wins Webster runs its current win streak to seven games.

In game one the Gorloks (16-10, 7-1 SLIAC) grabbed the early 1-0 lead with a pair of singles and a stolen base in the opening frame it was short lived though when Westminster (3-25, 1-9 SLIAC) got a three run homer in the top of the third from Morgan Campell to go up 3-1. WU rallied in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead at 4-3 on five hits and a pair of Blue Jay errors and then added on to its lead in the fifth with a bases clearing double from Sam Dittman that plated three runs. Webster scored its final run in the sixth on an Allie Park RBI double scoring Kelsey Washam.

Megan Sperry improved to 8-4 winning her third straight decision while tossing her fourth consecutive complete game giving up three runs on five hits with eight punch outs against one walk.

Dittman led the offense going a perfect 3-for-3 as the team pounded out 11 hits. Dana Vahey, Maria Hibbard and Nancy LaRose had two hits apiece.

In the night cap the Gorloks again got the early lead on Washam's eighth home run of the year for a 1-0 advantage after the first two were retired in the top of the first. Westminster took the lead scoring twice in the bottom of the inning on an error by Webster's defense for a 2-1 lead. WU came right back in the second tying the game on a RBI double from Dittman then after single from Gina Trapani Vahey put them back ahead with a three run homer her sixth of the season for a 5-2 lead. The two sides traded zeros over the next four innings before Hibbard hit her first home run of the year, a solo shot in the seventh, giving Webster a 6-2 lead. Lexie Moore came on in the bottom half of the inning, relieving Trapani, and recorded all three outs on ground balls back to her.

Trapani threw the first six innings allowing two runs, none earned, on nine hits with two walks and six Ks to improve to 8-2 on the season.

The Gorloks are back in action on Sunday afternoon hosting Fontbonne in a doubleheader at Blackburn Park starting at 1 p.m.
