Softball splits doubleheader with Greenville

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks split its conference opening doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon winning the first game 4-1 and then dropped the second game 8-6 at Greenville, Ill.

    In the opener the Gorloks (9-9, 1-1 SLIAC) completed its game from last Wednesday in which Webster had a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning when the game was postponed due to the rain. WU scored three unearned runs in the fourth with the final one coming off Allie Park's home run down the left field line. The Gorloks added its fourth run when Sam Dittman doubled home Kelsey Washam who had reached on a triple to right center. The Panthers (6-5, 1-1 SLIAC) made things interesting in the ninth before Webster turned a double play to end the game.

    Megan Sperry went the distance allowing an unearned run on two hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Washam had two of  Webster's four hits in the contest and scored a pair of runs. Dittmann had two RBIs in the game.

    In the nightcap Greenville raced out to a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings before WU got on the board with a bases loaded single from Sperry to the shortstop falling just past her outstretched glove plating two runs. The Gorloks had a chance for more but had a runner thrown out at third ending the inning. After the Panthers scored two more in the fifth the Gorloks came right back with two more of its own to cut it to 7-4 and had the tying run at the plate but a ground out to first ended the threat.
   
    Greenville added another run in the eighth to push the margin back to four but WU refused to go away scoring twice in the ninth and brought the winning run plate but a called third strike ended the game.

    Webster rapped out 16 hits in the contest with seven players recording at least two led by Washam with three. Lexie Moore fell to 0-3 on the season allowing three runs on six hits in two innings of work. Gina Trapani came on relief going the final five innings giving up five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

    The Gorloks return to action on Friday afternoon hosting Eureka College in a doubleheader at Blackburn with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
