Softball drops pair at Illinois Wesleyan

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan 7-1 and 9-1 in five innings this past Sunday in Bloomington, Ill.

In the opener WU (20-15) jumped on top in the first inning when Dana Vahey led off the game with her ninth home run of the season they would get another hit in the frame but  Sam Dittman was stranded to end the inning. IWU (28-7)  took advantage of  a couple of errors by the Gorlok defense to score three times in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Webster tried to rally in the third when Vahey led off with a single and stole second but a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to third ended the threat. After holding the Titans scoreless in the third and fourth innings WU led off the fifth getting a walk from Autumn Sensing and a single by Megan Sperry with nobody out and the top of the order up but were unable to come through with a hit leaving runners at second and third to end the threat.

Illinois Wesleyan broke the game open in the home half of the fifth scoring four runs on five hits with the big blow being a two run home run by the shortstop to make it 7-1.

Webster was only able to muster four hits in the loss lead by Vahey with two. Sperry dropped her third straight decision allowing seven runs, five earned on seven hits with one free pass and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work to fall to 10-7.

In game two the Titans got on the board first in the third inning on an unearned run for a 1-0 lead. WU came back though and tied the game in the fourth with one Dittman singled up the middle and then with two outs Allie Park singled through the left side advancing Dittman to second then she scored on Nancy LaRose's single to right. They would then load the bases but a ground out to second ended the threat.

IWU retook the lead in the bottom of the frame when its shortstop hit her second home run of the day leading off the inning to make it 2-1. The Gorloks had an opportunity to tie it in the fifth when Vahey drew a lead off walk and moved all the way over to third but they couldn't get the two out hit to bring her in and tie the score.

The Titans scored seven times in their half of the fifth with four of the runs coming on two homers to break open a 2-1 game and enforce the spread rule.

Gina Trapani suffered the loss allowing seven runs, six earned, on hight eights while striking out two and walking one to fall to 10-3 on the year.

Next action for Webster will be Thursday in the SLIAC Tournament at ABC Ball Park in St. Ann, Mo. this Thursday through Saturday. WU will be the second seed and play the third seeded Greenville Panthers at 5 p.m. on Thursday evening. For a map to ABC Park click here.
