Another DH Split for WU

It's almost becoming a trend of the Webster softball team. For the third straight non-conference doubleheader, the Gorloks had to settle for a split.

Senior Gina Trapani (2-3) allowed one earned run as WU claimed the opener over Coe, 5-1. She gave up five hits over seven innings with one strikeout and one walk.

The Kohawks scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break open a close game in the nightcap, winning 8-1.

Webster took the early lead on a solo home run by senior Kelsey Washam with two outs in the bottom of the first. An RBI fielder's choice by senior Mandy Van Velkinburgh and bases loaded walk to junior Samantha Dittmann helped the Gorloks push their advantage to 3-0 in the third.

Coe pulled a run closer with a run in the fourth, but Washam stroked an RBI single to score junior Megan Sperry, who doubled, from second.

Sperry led the way, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while drove was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Three first-inning errors helped the Gorloks take a 1-0 lead in the second game. An error in the third inning helped Coe score two runs and take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. An unearned run in the fifth pushed the cushion to two before the five-run, seventh-inning explosion.

Junior Lexie Moore (0-3) allowed seven runs (five earned) on night hit over 6 1/3 innings.

NOTES
  • It was the third time this season Kelsey Washam had more than one hit, and her first multi-RBI contest of the season. She had 30 career multi-RBI games.
  • Coe's pitcher Ashlee Simmons was unbeaten in six starts to start her collegiate career. She entered the game with an 0.86 ERA, but the Gorloks scored four earned runs off her.
  • Megan Sperry has recorded at least three hits in two of the last three games, and three times this season.
