An one-out single scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Webster had its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 defeat Wednesday in non-conference action.

With one out, the Spartans recorded a walk and single to put them in position for the winning run to cross the plate. Webster (6-9) won't have much time to reflect on the loss as the Gorloks will travel to Greenville Thursday for the opener of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference three-game series. The game was moved up from Friday due to impending weather. Saturday's doubleheader at GCS Ballpark is still schedule to begin at 2 p.m.

Sophomore Chris Cravatta (0-1) took the loss, pitching 1/3 of an inning, allowing one run on two hits. Freshman Mike Gebhardt went 4 2/3 innings in his second career start, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits. His outing was bookmarked by a rough beginning and ending. The southpaw allowed two runs in the first inning and three in the fifth. However, the middle portion of the stint was brilliant. Gebhardt yielded just one hit over the middle three innings.

Webster took advantage of two errors in the eighth inning to plate four unearned runs to pull even at five. Junior Dakota Huey and sophomore Brandon Micheletti started the inning with singles. After a pop out, a swinging bunt single by senior Andrew Fuiten combined with a throwing error, scored Huey and Micheletti. A dropped fly ball to right field kept the inning alive, leading to junior Zach Little's single that was blooped over the infield into right. The single scored Fuiten and senior Kyle Starnes with the tying runs.

Fuiten, who has recorded a hit in six of the last seven games, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Fuiten has multiple hits in five of the six contests. The recent stretch helped raise the senior outfielders batting average 200 points from .120 to .320. Little added two hits and two RBI in the defeat.

NOTES
  • Fuiten now has recorded more than one hit 28 times in his career.
  • Junior John DuHadway had possibly his best outing of the season. The right-hander hurled 3 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball with three strikeouts. It was his first trip to the mound in 10 days.
  • It was the 14th different lineup in 15 games for the Gorloks.

Initial Comments

"MoBap is probably the most talented team in St. Louis. They threw a couple of guys that kept us off balanced. We hung in there, had the mishap in the fifth. We just didn't come up with hits when we needed them."

On Andrew Fuiten
"He is starting to swing the bat the way we knew he would. When he is driving the ball, he makes everybody better. We he is going well, he has a very good on-base percentage. He will take his walks and not swing at bad pitches."

On the upcoming schedule
"If we play the way we did today, we will be in good shape for the rest of the year. Greenville always plays us tough. They play hard. Coach (Lynn) Carlson always does a good job with his team's."
