Career Day for Dittman

EUREKA, IL - One game after being a catalyst in Webster's comeback victory, junior Samantha Dittmann continued her offensive prowess. The second baseman drove in five runs in two games as Webster swept a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Eureka Saturday, 6-4 and 4-1.

Dittmann's two-out single in the top of the seventh capped the three-run inning as Webster overcame the one-run deficit. The Gorloks took the lead in the inning on senior Kelsey Washam's two-run home run. It was the second three-run inning for Webster.

WU opened the game by taking advantage of a Eureka miscue to score three unearned runs in the first inning. The star of the day, Dittmann, was also in the middle of  the innings offense. Her two-run single in the first capped the scoring for the frame.

The second game had Dittmann resurface as a thorn in the Red Devils' side. Her two-run home run in the second inning gave Webster a lead they wouldn't relinquish. It was the her first long ball since her very first collegiate game against Illinois College on March 6, 2007.

While Dittmann was supplying most of the offense, the pitching combination of Lexie Moore and Megan Sperry stymied the EC offense. The Red Devils only mustered runs in two of the game's 14 innings. Moore (2-5) earned her second consecutive win with seven innings of seven-hit softball. She allowed four earned runs with three strikeouts. Sperry was a little more dominant, yielding just one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Webster (15-15, 6-2 SLIAC) will return to the diamond as the Gorloks travel to Greenville 4 p.m. Wednesday.
