Webster Blanks Wartburg in NCAA Regional Matchup

Some games are decided by long bombs and some are decided by the little things.  Today's matchup between the Webster University Gorloks and the Wartburg College Knights was the latter.

Through 5 innings Wartburg's Angela Hartwig had a no hitter while striking out 11 Gorloks.  All of that changed in the 6th inning.

After recording yet another strikeout to begin the inning sophomore Erynn Coit became the first Webster baserunner when she took a 3-2 pitch for a walk.  Despite having 1 out in the inning head coach Chris Eaton did not hesitate to have junior Tara Camenzind sacrifice bunt and move Coit into scoring position.  Instead of the big blow that often comes in a winning effort junior Megan Sperry hit a slow roller right in front of home plate which she beat out at 1st and succeded in moving Coit to 3rd.

At this point in the game lightning showed up.

After an hour long storm delay the Gorloks came back onto the field with runners on 1st and 3rd and junior Cassie Mosier at the plate.  Rather than continuing with Hartwig, who had shut down Webster throughout the entire contest, the Knights changed pitchers and Lexy Determan immediately threw a wild pitch over the catchers head allowing Coit to score the only run of the game in a close play at the plate.

The top of the 7th went 1, 2, 3 and Webster remained unbeaten in the NCAA Regional Tournament with a 1-0 victory.  Webster's Megan Sperry pitched a complete game shutout with 5 strikeouts while only allowing 4 hits and no runs.

In 2 games Webster has scored 4 runs, all of them unearned.

Webster will take on Gustavus Adolphus tomorrow at 4 in a matchup of the only 2 unbeaten teams in Indianola, IA.

Check back tomorrow for updates on how the Gorloks fare against Gustavus Adolphus.
