Gorloks Settle for Split in Twinbill Behind Sperry Gem

The Webster University women's softball team won game one of a double-header vs. Westminster College, 7-0, behind a complete game shutout by Megan Sperry (SR, Clarkston HS, MI), but dropped game two to the Blue Jays, 5-4, at Blackburn Park on April 14.

Sperry pitched her third shutout of the season as she lowered her earned run average to 2.64, and raised her record to 6-3.  She allowed five hits and two walks, and struck out four in the victory.  Sperry was a hitting star for the game, going three for four with a run scored and an RBI.  Jessica Arcangel (FR, St. Lucy's Priory, CA) was two for four with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI.

A three-run eighth in the nightcap gave Westminster the victory, 5-4, and erased a 4-2 lead Webster had taken in the top half on the inning.  Sam Dittmann (SR, St. Pius X HS, STL) had given the Gorloks the lead with Webster's first home run of the season, a two-run blast to right center field.  Freshman Ashley Meagher (Dupo HS, IL) pitched all seven and two-thirds innings for Webster, allowing nine hits and five runs, four earned.  It was Meagher's first loss of the season as she fell to 5-1.

The Gorloks and Blue Jays were scoreless through five before Webster pulled ahead, 2-0, in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a Dittmann two-run double.  Webster was the visiting team in accordance with St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rules for softball double-headers.  The lead was short-lived as Westminster tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and the game headed into extra innings, 2-2.

In addition to Dittmann's heroics, Kaytlin Burczak (FR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL) went three for four, giving her four hits for the double-header as she added a double in game one.

The Gorloks are back at Blackburn Park on April 17 for two games with MacMurray College (IL).  Webster is 6-2 in the SLIAC and 13-11 overall.
