In what has to be termed a "tough" tie, the Webster University men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 final with Principia College (IL), on October 22 at the Soccer Park. The Gorloks dominated play in regulation, outshooting the Panthers 16-7 and being outfouled 19-10, but needed a goal in the final minutes of regulation by Corey Gauvain (SO, St. John Vianney HS) to salvage the tie.
In addition to dominating play, the Gorloks gained the added advantage of playing a man up as Principia was called for a red card on a flagrant foul on Clint Carder (JR, DeSoto HS, MO), just outside the penalty area, with 31 minutes remaining in the contest. But down a player, Principia took a 1-0 lead at the 75:53 mark on a shot headed out of the net by a Webster defender that was ruled to have crossed the goal line. Webster goalkeeper Alex Cupp (SR, Lutheran South HS) was caught out of goal trying to run down a shot he had deflected.
Down a goal, Webster seemed to gain an intensity that culminated in Gauvain scoring his goal off a cross by Bryan Enger (SR, Mehlville HS). Cupp, who had made four saves and allowed only the one goal in 90 minutes of regulation argued, a foul call against Webster with seconds remaining. His continued displeasure with the call at the conclusion of regulation led to his being given a red card, evening up the sides, and making Brian Woodward (FR, Eureka HS) the de facto goalie for Webster in OT.
Woodward faced five shots and made two saves in the two 10-minute OT periods to keep the Panthers at one goal, while the Gorloks could muster no shots and settled for the tie.
The loss drops Webster to 3-2-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and 6-7-2 overall. Webster will be home of October 25 to face Westminster College on 'Senior Night.' The Gorloks conclude their regular season with a game at Blackburn College (IL) on October 29.
