Gorloks 'Headed' Home After Championship Loss

For the 2011 Webster University men's soccer team, a good defense was its best offense.  After allowing two first half goals, the team had no answer offensively in a 2-0 defeat at Greenville College in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.  The Panthers scored both goals on headers off free kicks, at the 21:00 mark, and at the 32:00 mark.  The Gorloks were hoping to secure the SLIAC Tournament and make, what seemed to be a highly unlikely entry just 10 days ago, into the NCAA III Championships.

Webster needed season ending losses by two teams, a must win in its own final regular season game, and a first round win on the road over the Tournament's #1 seed to get them to this point.   But a miracle finish wasn't to be in 2011.  Greenville handed the Gorloks their eighth shutout of the season, with seven of their nine losses coming with no goals scored.  Webster finished at 8-9-2.

Several Gorloks received accolades from the SLIAC.  Josh Sellmeyer (JR, Mehlville HS) was named to the 2011 SLIAC All-Conference First Team.  Teammate Kyle Leonard (JR, Lafayette HS) was named to the 2011 SLIAC All-Conference Second Team and Clint Carder (JR, DeSoto HS, MO) was an Honorable Mention selection for 2011.  Sellmeyer was also named to the SLIAC Men's Soccer All-Sportsmanship Team.

Sellmeyer, Carder, and Brelon Buckner (FR, Hazelwood Central HS) were named to the 2011 SLIAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the first round, 1-0, win over Westminster, and the loss to Greenville.

Four seniors saw their final games as Gorloks.  Alex Cupp (Lutheran South HS) and Shea Vogt (Marquette HS) finished up their second seasons, Bryan Enger (Mehlville HS) his third, and Dominic DeVasto (St. John Vianney HS) his fourth season.  Webster can look forward to having 22 returning players for 2012.
