'Los Gorloks' Put Focus on International Flavor

Men and Women Pick Up Victories Donning New Moniker

Donning shirts that proclaimed them "Los Gorloks" in honor of their Central American members, the men's and women's tennis teams were both victors at the Webster Groves Tennis Center, on April 8.  The women downed Greenville College (IL), 7-2, while the men defeated Concordia Seminary, 9-0.  On April 9, both squads were victorious over Lindenwood-Belleville (IL), with the men winning 7-2, and the women winning, 8-1.

Webster men's sophomores Diego Alarcon and Agustin Villalba hail from Quito, Ecuador, and attended the American School.  For the Webster women, Maria Arias is from Costa Rica, and attended Lincoln High School in San Jose.  To add further to the international make-up of the squads, Adis Beganovic, a senior men's player who attended St. John the Baptist in St. Louis, is a native Bosnian.

The tennis squads at Webster have had an international flavor to them for many years, as student/athletes from England, Japan, The Phillipines, and others from Ecuador, have been a vital part of the teams' success.

In the women's match vs. Belleville-Lindenwood, Lindsey Hays (SO, Francis Howell HS) extended her overall match win streak to 17, winning singles and doubles.  Hays moved up to the #1 slot for the match vs. Lindenwood.  In the match vs. Greenville, Kate Coen (JR, Rockwood Summit HS) won her 15th straight match overall with a win at singles, but saw the streak end with a loss in doubles.

With her win at singles vs. Greenville, Allison Tungate (JR, Flora HS, IL) won her 36th career match, the all-time high for the Webster women.  Hannah Wojahn (SR, Cannon Falls HS, MN) set the Webster career high for wins at doubles with her 35th victory in the match vs. Lindenwood.

Also rewriting the record books for the Webster men, Ryan Fassler (JR, Lutheran South HS) won his 23rd career singles match vs. Concordia, moving him into first on the all-time high list.  Fassler eclipsed a record held by Rolf Rothermel (2007-09), who was from England. Zach Papes (SR, McCluer North HS) had jumped into first place on the career double list with his 19th win for the Gorloks, on April 5 at Greenville.

Webster has a home match vs. Quincy University (IL) on April 10.  The men and women both play in the SLIAC Individual Championships at theCreve Coeur Tennis Center on April 15-16.
