The Webster University men's soccer team lost to t9th-ranked Washington University, 2-1, on September 1, at AB Soccer Park. Facing a staunch adversary on opening day is a tough assignment. But facing that opponent with seven different starters from opening day 2010, including three freshmen, is an even tougher one. Despite being on the short end of the outcome, the Gorloks faired well.
After being outplayed the first 25 minutes of the game, the Gorloks showed some life. Immediately following a Washington University goal that gave them a 2-0 lead at the 20:30 mark in the first, Webster picked up the play with more ball movement and more physical play for the duration of the half. Starting the second half somewhat sluggishly as well, Bryan Enger (SR, Mehlville HS) put a jolt into the Gorloks by scoring the team's first goal of the season. That cut the lead to 2-1, but Webster could not put up another tally as that score became the final.
The team travels to the Chicago area for a pair of games over the Labor Day weekend. Webster first faces Concordia University on September 3, and after a day off, meets Aurora University on Labor Day morning, September 5. The Gorloks continue a stretch of six straight road games on September 10 vs. Millikin Univeristy (IL) in Bloomington, IL.
