Ties may be "like kissing your sister," but for the Webster University men's soccer team, a 2-2 tie in 2OT at Greenville College, secured the Gorloks first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title since 2006. Webster finished the season with a 6-1-1 SLIAC record and 19 points. Even with games remaining on the SLIAC schedule, the next best any other conference member can finish with is 18 points.
Finishing first, the Gorloks will now host Fontbonne University in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament. A loss to Greenville would have opened the door for the Panthers to take the championship and could have left the Gorloks as low as third place, and with no home game for the Tournament. But Webster responded to the challenge in a big way.
Clint Carder (SR, DeSoto HS, MO) opened the scoring for the Gorloks at the 17:00 mark of the first half with his sixth goal of the season. A Greenville goal at the 33:00 mark sent the teams into the locker room tied. Greenville scored again at the 66:00 minute mark in the second and the Greenville fans were smelling a championship.
But Agustin Villalba (SR, American School, Ecuador) scored his first goal of the year, just four minutes later, to knot the game up at 2-2. The Gorloks held off Greenville in regulation, and sent the partisan crowd home unhappy as neither team scored in the two overtime sessions.
Webster finished the regular season 10-5-2 overall The Gorloks will host the Fontbonne in the SLIAC Tournament on November 1, at 7:00 p.m., at the Soccer Park.
