On a day when it looked like the only softball game played in St. Louis would have been in a domed stadium, the Webster University softball team managed to finish two, beating Spalding University (KY) 4-1 in the opener, and losing 4-3 in a rain-shortened finale. The Gorloks, who entered the games tied with Spalding for second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, finished the evening still tied at 7-3 with the split at Blackburn Park, on April 13.
Ashley Meagher (JR, Dupo HS, IL) pitched her sixth straight solid start on the mound in game one. In picking up her fifth win of the year, she allowed one earned run, four hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. In her last 46.1 innings, Meagher has allowed just 10 earned runs for a 1.51 ERA over that span, and has a 4-1 record.
Jessica Arcangel (JR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) put Webster on top in the second with a solo home run, her second of the season, and Hanna Brindisi (SR, John A. Logan CC, IL) hit her first of the year, a solo shot also, in the fourth.
Trisha Thompson (SO, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) took the mound in game two and gave up four hits, two walks, and four runs-three earned, in two and two-thirds innings of work. Down 4-0, the Gorloks mounted a comeback in the fourth inning, picking up three runs on a walk, an error, and a double. Kristie Konersmann's (SO, Northwest HS) gapper was the big blow in the inning and drove in two, leaving the Gorloks down by one.
Spalding added two more in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, and the Gorloks were mounting a threat with runners at first and third and one out. But a storm that was hanging over the region finally struck, and Webster's luck avoiding rain ran out. With lightning and thunder all-around and the rain starting to pick up, the umpires called the game, erasing the sixth and reverting to the 4-3 Golden Eagle lead at the end of the fifth.
Webster is 13-17 on the season. The Gorloks have a doubleheader at Blackburn vs. Washington University on April 15, and are back in action in the SLIAC as they play at Fontbonne University on April 18. The games on April 15 will mark the NFCA's 'Strike Out Cancer" and hot dogs and snacks will be available to fans in attendance.
