Early Goals Difference in Win

Box Score Kris Brown and Mike Wells scored in the opening six minutes of the first half to lead the Webster University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Spalding University (Ky.) Wednesday (Oct. 23) in Louisville.

The Gorloks have won seven of their last eight games and outscored their opponents 16-5 during that span.

The game pitted two teams in the top half of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings. Webster entered with a 4-1 SLIAC record while Spalding was 4-2 in conference play.

Brown (Wentzville, MO / St. Charles CC), a junior midfielder, gave Webster a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute with his fifth goal in six games. Freshman forward BJ Dryer (St. Louis, MO / Pattonville) was credited with the assist.

About a minute after Brown's goal, Wells (St. Louis, MO / McCluer North), a junior midfielder, recorded his fourth game-winning goal of the season. Wells ranks third in game-winning tallies among all SLIAC players this season.

Junior goalkeeper Brian Woodward (Eureka, MO / Eureka) made two saves as Webster outshot the home team, 15-11. Ten of the Gorloks' shot attempts were on goal, while three of the home team's shots were on frame.

Webster improved to 10-3-3 overall and 5-1 in the SLIAC.

Next up for Webster is a road game at MacMurray (Ill.) Saturday (Oct. 26). The Gorloks return home to face Westminster Tuesday (Oct. 29) at 5 p.m. at St. Louis Soccer Park.
