Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team allowed two first-half goals — including a penalty-kick tally in the opening minute — in a 2-1 loss to Westminster College in the championship of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
With the loss Friday (Nov. 8) in Fulton, Mo., Webster's season came to a close. The Gorloks (14-4-3 overall, 8-1 SLIAC) tied for the third-most season wins in program history and had the most since 1999 when Webster won 16 games.
Westminster (11-8-1 overall, 8-1 SLIAC) earned the SLIAC tournament's No. 1 seed and the right to host Webster due to the conference's tiebreaking criteria. Webster, the No. 3 seed, defeated Westminster 1-0 during the regular season.
The home team got on the board 44 seconds into the contest on a penalty-kick goal, and added to its lead in the 39th minute.
Less than four minutes after halftime, freshman Alex Whalen (Chesterfield, MO / Parkway Central) cut the lead in half with his fourth goal in the last three games. Whalen was named to the all-tournament team along with juniors Jeff Wallner (Eureka, MO / Eureka) and Jacob Stieb (Highland, IL / SWIC).
Webster attempted three shots after Whalen's goal — all of which were on-target — but could not break through. Webster totaled nine shots on goal for the game while Westminster had eight, as junior Brian Woodward (Eureka, MO / Eureka) made six saves for the Gorloks.
Webster beat Westminster 2-0 at St. Louis Soccer Park in last year's SLIAC tournament championship. The Gorloks have appeared in three straight SLIAC tournament championships and nine overall. Webster has won the conference tournament title four times.
Webster scored 52 goals this season (2.5 per game) and conceded a conference-best 22 goals (1.0 goals per game). The Gorloks shut out five of their opponents in succession midway through the season and had nine shutouts overall.
At the conclusion of the game, seven Webster players were honored with postseason awards, including freshman BJ Dryer (St. Louis, MO / Pattonville), who was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year.
Three seniors — McCaffrey, Marc Hager (St. Louis, MO / St. John Vianney) and Korey Gauvain (St. Louis, MO / St. John Vianney) — played their final collegiate game. McCaffrey scored 18 goals in his three-year Webster career — ranking him tied for 12th in program history — and compiled 45 points, the 14th most in school history.
