Gorloks Hit 13-Run Pool to Open 2013

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team opened its 2013 campaign with a split, falling to Millsaps College, 5-3, before defeating Centenary College (LA), 13-2, for its first win of 2013.  The Gorloks were playing in a round-robin, hosted by Millsaps in Jackson, MS, on March 2.  Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) was one of several newcomers to the team who made a significant contribution in their first action for Webster.

In Webster's 13-2 win in game two, Muntz was three for three, with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Leah Sutton, a freshman from Woodlawn HS (IL), was two for three, with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Ally Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) was three for four, with two RBIs, and transfer shortstop Kelley Bridgmon (JR, Windsor HS/Meramec CC), was two for two, with a double and two runs scored.

The Gorloks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Centenary came right back with two of their own in the bottom to tie it.  Those would be the only two runs that starter Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) would allow as she went the distance for the win.  Webster had five straight hits in a five-run second and added two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth.  Powers allowed four hits and just one earned run in her five innings of work, striking out three and walking two as she starts the year 1-0.

In the opener, Webster took a lead with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth.  Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) lead off the inning with a double and moved to third on a Courtney Gass (JR, Wesclin HS, IL) sac bunt.  Muntz singled Mahoney in for the Gorloks first run of the season.

Webster tacked on two more runs in the fourth as the Gorloks received two walks and an error to start the inning.  Singles by Gass and Muntz each plated a run as the Gorloks took a 3-1 lead.  Webster was sailing along until a four-run sixth by the Majors sunk them.  Starting pitcher Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) hit a wild streak in the frame as four of Millsaps first five batters reached, three via walks.  Two Major singles and a sacrifice fly gave Millsaps a 5-3 lead.  The Gorloks were scoreless in the seventh as the Majors prevailed.

Thompson pitched six innings, allowing five runs on five hits, as she struck out four and walked.four.  The Gorloks were flawless in the field with no errors but offensively left eight runners on base in the loss.

Muntz wound up five for seven, with four RBIs on the afternoon.  Watson was five for eight and Mahoney was two for five with two runs scored, and reached base twice on errors.

The Gorloks will play both Centenary and Millsaps, at host Millsaps, again on March 3.  On March 8, Webster travelsl to Florida for Spring break to participate in the Rebel Games in Kissimmee.  The Gorloks will play eight games in five days.
