Gorloks Take Two From Devils, 4-1 & 4-0

Powers Picks Up Shutout in Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University women's softball team took a doubleheader from Eureka College (IL), 4-1 and 4-0, at Blackburn Park on April 12.  Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) and Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) picked up the wins, with Powers throwing her first career shutout.  The Gorloks are 5-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the wins.

The Gorloks scoring in the first game win all came in a four-run third.  Kelley Bridgmon (JR, Seckman HS, MO) singled and took second on a Kayla Mahoney (SR, Fox HS, MO) sacrifice bunt.  Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS) then had a bunt single, and a ground ball right through the Red Devil first baseman's legs by Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL) scored Bridgmon.

Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) flied to left but the ball was dropped by the left fielder as Franck scored and Muntz and Watson took second and third.  Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0.

Thompson allowed a solo home run in the sixth to end her bid for a seventh shutout, but held Eureka to five hits, one walk, and struck out 10 in picking up her seventh win.  She is 7-5 on the season.  Arcangel was one for two with the two RBIs and is hitting ,421 to lead the Gorloks.
Franck was two for three, with a run scored and a stolen base.

In game two, the Gorloks relied on the long ball to generate all four runs.  Watson hit a solo shot with two out in the first to put Webster up 1-0.  The home run was Watson's first of the year.  Nursing a 1-0 lead in the sixth, Muntz singled and Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL) walked.  Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL) followed with a three-run blast well over the left field fence to make it 4-0.  It was her team-leading fifth of the season.

Watson wound up one for three, with the HR, and is hitting .388 on the year.  Gibbs was one for three, with the HR, and three RBIs.

Powers kept the Red Devils at bay, having to pitch out of several jams along the way to preserve the win and the shutout.  Powers gave up seven hits, five walks, and struck out three in gaining the shutout.  She improved to 3-1 on the season.

Webster is 16-7 overall on the season.  The wins over Eureka began a stretch of six games in four day for the Gorloks.  Webster will play a doubleheader at Washington University on April 14, and travel to Jacksonville, IL, on April 15 for a doubleheader with MacMurray College.
