Gorloks Engineer Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team had two solid pitching efforts as it swept Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (IN), 3-0 and 3-2, on April 3 at Blackburn Park.  Trisha Thompson (JR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) threw her second consecutive shutout in the opener and Samantha Powers (JR, John F. Kennedy HS, MO) allowed just one earned run as the Gorloks took the nightcap, 3-2.

Thompson allowed just three hits and two walks as she tossed her fifth shutout of the season.  She now has 13 career shutouts and is tied for second place on Webster's all-time high list with Webster Hall of Famer Jeanne (Zes) Gilbert (1998-2000).  Thompson didn't allow her first hit until one out in the sixth and struck out 10.  She evened her season record at 5-5 and lowered her ERA to 2.06.

Webster scored all three of its runs with two outs in the third inning.  Erin McGinnis (FR, Rockwood Summit, MO) led off with a single and after two outs, Rachel Franck (FR, McCluer North HS, MO) beat out an infield single and McGinnis scored on the throw to first.  Franck stole second and scored on a bloop hit by Molly Muntz (JR, Streator HS, IL).  Muntz took third on another bloop hit by Aly Watson (SR, Ft. Zumwalt South HS, MO) and scored on a double by Kaytlin Burczak (SR, Bishop McNamara HS, IL).

In game two, the Engineers jumped ahead, 1-0, on a lead-off home run but the Gorloks tied it up in their half of the first.  Franck singled, stole second and third, and scored on a sac fly to center by Watson.  Powers scattered four hits over the next three innings to keep Rose-Hulman at bay until Webster took a 3-1 lead in the fourth.  Watson walked to lead off and Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) singled her to third.  Watson scored on a sac fly by Burczak as Arcangel took second on the throw home.  Arcangel came around on a single by Taylor Gibbs (SO, Alton HS, IL).

Powers got into a jam in the fifth as the Engineers had back to back singles to open the frame, and scored a run on an errant throw to first on the second hit.  Powers got the next three batters out to avoid any more damage and Webster still led 3-2.  After a 1-2-3 sixth, Rose-Hulman had consecutive runners reach in the seventh with two out, on a walk and hit batsman.  But Powers retired the final batter on a ground out to pick up her second win of the season.

Franck was three for six on the night, with three stolen bases, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Muntz was two for five, with a double, walk, RBI, and a run scored.

Webster is 12-7 overall on the season.  The Gorloks are back home at Blackburn Park on April 9 for a doubleheader with Principia College (IL) and home again for a doubleheader with Eureka College (IL) on April 12.
