Golden Goal Gives Gorloks Win in Opener

Box Score Mike Wells scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime period to propel Webster University men's soccer team to a season-opening  2-1 victory against Millikin University (Ill.) in Bloomington, Ill.

Wells (St. Louis, MO / McCluer North), who led the Gorloks in scoring with eight goals last season, converted in the 107th minute to give Mike Siener his first career win as a collegiate head coach.

The game marked the first time since 1987 that the Gorloks opened the season with a head coach other than Marty Todt.  Todt, a Webster Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, remains with the program as an assistant coach to aid the transition.

A pair of freshmen in their collegiate debut teamed up for Webster's first goal. Jamie Lawrence (Florissant, MO / Hazelwood West) scored at the 24-minute mark with an assist from Dylan Tamprow (Hazelwood, MO / Hazelwood West).

Goalie Brian Woodward (Eureka, MO / Eureka), one of two returning all-conference first team honorees, along with Wells, made three saves. The Gorloks outshot Millikin 12-10.

This is the fourth time since 2005 that these two schools have met in the season opener. All four contests have been decided by one goal.

Webster was the pre-season favorite to win its conference, according to a poll of coaches in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Gorloks are back in action Saturday (Aug. 31) to face host Illinois Wesleyan at 7:30 pm.
